Easy does it for super Chiefs

Tim Nanai Williams chiefs v sharks

Opening try: Tim Nanai-Williams

The Chiefs were crowned Super Rugby champions for the first time after brushing aside the toothless Sharks 37-6 in a one-sided final at Hamilton's Waikato Stadium on Saturday.

Whilst the hosts were deserved winners and full value for their win, the Sharks were always going to be at a significant disadvantage following their taxing travelling schedule - their last stop ultimately proving to be a bridge too far for the visitors.

Besides the opening 20 minutes of the game, the season finale was sadly a mis-match as the Chiefs outplayed their travel-weary South African counterparts in all facets of play. All the Sharks had to do was turn up and the Chiefs did the rest.

There wasn't any anxious moments as you would expect in a final compared to last week's two nerve-racking encounters. Instead, relaxed Chiefs fans could sit back and watch their team dismantle the opposition.

Tries by Tim Nanai-Williams, Kane Thompson, Lelia Masaga and Sonny Bill Williams ensured that the Chiefs were always well clear of their opponents.

Fly-half Aaron Cruden delivered another stunning performance and he too ensured that his side stayed in control of proceedings by knocking over all four conversions and three penalties, while the Sharks' only replies came from the boot of fly-half Frederic Michalak.

The French international was not as hot as he was during the play-offs and semis, whilst the returning Patrick Lambie also failed to hit the mark.

Tactically the Sharks dished up their poorest showing of the season while their normally solid defence crumbled as the match wore on. Then there were also a number of unforced errors that added to the team's frustration, and the previously dominant Sharks forwards were put through their paces by a powerhouse Chiefs pack.

The Sharks did enjoy the better of the opening exchanges after a JP Pietersen kick drilled the Chiefs into the corner and Ryan Kankowski stole the line-out. But their only reward was a sole penalty by Michalak before the Chiefs began to work their way into the game with superior forward power and a more accurate kicking game.

A 10-minute period of relentlessly testing the Sharks' defence ended when Chiefs centre Andrew Horrell recovered a Cruden chip kick knocked on by Lambie, and a Williams' break led to Tim Nanai-Williams scoring out wide.

Cruden landed the touchline conversion and two penalties after the Du Plessis brothers Jannie and Bismarck both infringed to have the Chiefs ahead 13-3 at half-time.

Chiefs hooker Mahonri Schwalger put his side in command at the start of the second half when he stole the kick-off from the Sharks forwards. From an attacking scrum, number eight Kane Thompson was able to pick up the ball and run through a huge gap to score the Chiefs' second try.

Replacement wing Lelia Masaga put the match firmly in the Chiefs' grasp with 20 minutes remaining when he snapped up a misdirected Keegan Daniel pass and raced 50 metres to the line, stepping deftly around Lambie on the way.

Cruden landed the conversion and a further penalty before Williams, in his final match for the Chiefs, capped off the scoring with a try in the closing minutes which he followed with a celebratory dive into the crowd.

Man of the match: Tough one! The Chiefs back three were always in the thick of it, while prop Sona Taumalolo was once again a bull-dozer on attack. But the official gong went to co-captain Liam Messam after the match, and we find it pretty hard to argue with that choice.

Moment of the match: It has to be SBW's leap of joy into the home crowd after scoring his try. A sight to behold and one never seen before as far as we can recall in the beautiful game...

Villain of the match: No yellow or red cards shown, but Chiefs prop Ben Tameifuna can thank his lucky stars after his high hit on Ryan Kankowski wasn't picked up by the officials.

@Carpelone

Yeah that is true but in saying this refs all around the world are missing this part of the game which to me is annoying. The only time I ever see it getting called (in NZ anyway) is from ITM Cup level down. The scrum is supposed to be a contest. Cheeky lil buggers those halfbacks are haha

Congrats to the Chiefs. There was only 1 team in that. The sharks looked tired from the air miles they built up.

I believe there should be a 2 week gap between semis and finals to allow for teams who have to travel to get their bodies in some kind of natural rhytham.

People can make an argument to say you get rewarded for finishing in the top 3.

Well again congrats to the Chiefs.

The scary thing about the Chiefs is only 5 maybe 6 of their squad will make the AB squad for the rugby championship. Players like Robinson, Horrell, Nanai-Williams,Thompson,Tameifuna wont get a look in. Clarke should get a chance now that Ali Williams is out, but wait and see.

As much as it pains me to say it "I agree with jaystarr", man I should wash my mouth for saying that... I wanted the sharks to win for they have been playing great lately especally for an SA team that you want to watch and I'm a kiwi bloke... The top prop going along with SBW , I wonder what would happen if cruden was absent for long periods of the season how will the chiefs do next year? Wayne smith reckons they are going to start a new dynasty , big call by Mr sMith but hey he can say that considering what he's achieved in rugby eh?

The deserved to win against the crusaders in semi however there niggle never got pinged and the ref should have put his foot down with both teams, messams try was forward and I don't think the tmo try should have been awarded. In hind sight the previous game the tmo has been awful and giving trys when the shouldn't have so I am not really suprised....

Go crusaders next year! I hope this gets toddy to alter is side a bit and get rid of some players that will add more next year , to all the na sayers out there that question his coaching then what was the problem with making it into the semi's again this year other than wining? If the crusaders win it each time it is going to get boring and frankly the other teams are catching up now which is great!

Well done Chiefs. The best side won the tournament. I am assuming that Tameifuna will be cited, but that doesn't detract from the win.

And by the way, here's another little gem from a Saffa, this time @captkirk (solving the mystery of why the Stormers lost to the Sharks in the semi-final):

"not to mention the crafty Walsh who assisted in orchestrating all this beautifully"

So, you are asserting that Steve Walsh made sure the Stormers lost, presumably so that the Chiefs would get a home final and thus an unfair advantage over the SA team.

Seriously dude, you need to get over it. Do you actually understand anything about rugby at all? Ever been to a game? Played it, perhaps? Or are you just another @Bok in disguise?

For my sad friend Daibok:

Well done Sharks you played awesome rugby in the latter stages of the tournament. No team could have beaten the Chiefs with your travels. Better luck next year!

See Boet, we all love the game! ;)

Now bring on the Currie cup!

Well done Chiefs, deserved champions this year. Was hoping the Crusaders would at least make the final, but the Chiefs showed why they were the best team in the competition this year.

That said, the Sharks to me were the standout SA team this year, especially in the latter half of the competition - much more rounded than the Bulls or the Stormers.

This makes it 11 Super wins to NZ (3 teams), 3 to Aus (2 teams) and 3 to SA (1 team). Makes one appreciate the depth of delusion in SARU for suggesting to add a 6th SA team to the competition. What a circus.

I hope you did not follow trinats prediction and put money on the sharks by 11 points

There you were recently telling us how good he was with them LOL:)

Sorry I couldn't resit that. Good luck to you!

Well done the chiefs and good luck to the sharks for the future.

He also allowed Kerr-Barlow to insert the ball directly to the second rows. He did this for almost every scrum, to avoing being contested by the Sharks. Frustrating.

Childish comment from one-eyed commentator.

Well done Chiefs, deserving champs. Pity Sharks, you have to get a better ranking if you want to compete for the title. It will be next year.

Aaaa martin i see your mom has let you back on the internet, and it seem that you have grown a pair of goons, trying to bad mouth the sharks on the back of the chiefs achievement. I find it funny how stormers supporters actually believe they would have stood a chance against the chiefs if they played at newlands....espcially if the stormers could not even manage to beat a travel weary sharks side last week.

Chiefs would have won wherever this was played . Well done. Sharks shone for first 10 mins but Chiefs had all the answers for next 70.

I see that someone has lifted a rock and @martinmoronIQ78 has crawled out. It's a shame he has neither love nor understanding of the game.

There has been nothing but good natured sporting rivalry posted before and after this game until that rock was lifted.
