Waratahs boss Michael Cheika has paid tribute to his charges after their record-breaking 32-5 victory over the Reds on Saturday.

The win was the hosts highest ever triumph over their Australian rivals, with Cheika praising his side's ability to consistently perform the basics well.

"The game plan was simple; nothing too technical... just committed to working hard," said Cheika.

"Rugby's a simple game - if you run hard, pick your spots and get good go-forward, we've got guys who can play."

The coach was at pains to laud prolific convert Israel Folau; the Wallabies full-back adding two more tries to his hat-trick on the opening weekend, but refused to get carried away by the Waratahs' fine early form.

"He's a good player - and most importantly he's blending into the team's fabric. He knows where to be and he's getting even more involved in the line.

"We're mature enough to know there's a long way to go. We've only played two games and we've got 14 to go so we're only really at the bottom of the mountain."
