Every time the Kings make the news, the message that comes across from the structure is that they are victims of discrimination and that the whole world is against them.
Now that they have their long awaited lollypop (which they got with no merit whatsoever, in my view!) they want to be able to use more foreign players and they don't want to have their competitiveness subject to evaluation.
I think SANZAR has not thought it through, at least on the rugby side of things...

Trinats, you overlook the migration of the relegated team. Stormers, Bulls and Sharks will pillage those teams always maintaining a steady stream of up and coming talent and settled players. The only way those 3 teams could blow it is if they have an "Alive" moment... eeek who flies to Argentina first out of NZ/Aus/SA?

Just wait a couple of years..there will be 6 SA teams and the Aussies will want another team from Sydney ( More people than NZ don`t you know ?)
But the Super rugby winners will generally come from NZ...strange that...

It is a shambles ,and im pretty sure the KINGS ,arnt they only franchise the playoff will apply to.As i understand the situation the last team in the SA conferance will playoff against the Currie cup winners.Even then the only way things will change is if the Lions win the Currie cup and playoff, whoever its against. If the Bulls or anyother S15 teams Currie cup side wins the playoff even against the KINGS .The Kings will stay as a S15 team as the bulls ect already are in the S15.Total and utter shambles from start to finish and even the outcome causes confusion and and is shambolic, considering its been on the cards since 2005 SARU have reaaly taken the gold medal for stupidity. The best answer was the merger of the Cheetahs and Lions as a refranchised CATS but of course that was to simply for SARU to implement.

"I think it is a ludicrous decision," - Which part?! Dropping the Lions without prior warning that a bottom place on the log would see them relegated? Leaving players potentially jobless? Impacting on the long term playing stocks in JHB because players don't know whether they are going to be able to play Super rugby there anymore and have to leave their provincial side to relocate? The fact that the Kings only have a handful of players who are decent at Currie Cup level and are going to get thrashed? The fact that the Kings only have a handful of players at all?!
I would say the same about the RFU as well APV1 but at least sense prevailed in the Newcastle vs London Welsh saga.

its called competition. I don't see Cheeky moaning about the lions getting religated. So does cheeky think his francise is suddenly above all others and should have special previledges??? You wanna stay up? Then play good rugby! You start rewarding mediocrity and it'll be the springboks that'll suffer.

The whole thing's a shambles. If I didn't know better, I would expect this to have been an RFU classic!
I do see his point, though. It's tough to achieve in the first season after promotion. But that's what we live with in the AP and Quins, Saints and Exeter are good examples of successes.
The one thing they have in their favour is a Playoff. I take that to mean that the bottom team will play the best from below. Whoever wins goes / stays up.
