The boys need to get back on the Speights.

Sharkyzula

And how about the penalty where the SA commentators thought the highlanders were hard done by. Both teams had things go for and against them and you may well think that Walsh is not much of a referee but to say he is biased is a nonsense

@Sharky - also saw that cheap shot stiff arm to Bismarck's throat by one of the Highlanders. There was also a shoulder charge and a high tackle made by the Landers that were completely ignored. But worst of all was how the Highlanders were allowed to just go over the top of the ruck and fall off their feet. He just stood there watching it.

Well done Sharks, I didn't think you'd pull this one off. Lambie and Whitehead are both excellent players,

Damn, i think its that time of the season where the Highlanders start to fall apart...hope they regain form.

IMO Steyn is lucky that Goosen is injured, That is probably the only way he'll get game time for the Boks. Goosen and Lambie have been in great form this year, while Steyns been inconsistent.

The handling of the Highlanders was not up to its normal high level whether because of the conditions or pressure, is of no matter it was a telling factor.

Do you really think Meyer will give the young brigade a go when his whole tone so far has to try to bring back the old brigade. Goosen getting injured has helped his selections as he doesnt need to. Of course it needs to be pointed out that neither Goosen or Lambie wear the Blue (pink) Jersey. So their chances of being fly half for the boks when the incumbant is a Bulls player would be as likely as a crowd at Pretoria applauding Bryce Lawrence for his refereeing. He has surrounded himself with Bulls coaching panel so Steyn is safe as fly half for the Boks.

@Sharkyzulu and so the refereeing battering goes on. Calling him an imbecile is is rather rich. Perhaps you could give us an idea of your own refereeing pedigree. You use vague examples of where he was allegedly wrong but seriously it is your own opinion rather than law. You ask if there is a worse ref than Walsh how about these two who you must have seen Pro Legoate and Johan Muewessen? If you don't agree they have both been tried and sacked as not good enough. Walsh has been refereeing Super and International Rugby for many years and is thought good enough to referee a Super Rugby final many test matches and represent two countries .

Sharkyzulu - for impartial refs - look no further than the clown in the Cheetahs/Force game. Very plain who he had his money on, nothing like supporting the locals. Force coach Blake was very polite: ''Some of the decisions were bewildering to say the least."

Three season-ending injuries for the Highlanders from this match: openside flanker Doug Tietjens, No. 8 Elliot Dixon, midfielder Shaun Treeby are all out for the rest of the year.

Are you kidding me? The Sharks were very cynical at the breakdown... all night & to make matters worse they got 6 - 9 points from penalties that should of been blown the other way.

I'm sick of seeing teams play no rugby & knocking penalties over from long range that don't deserve the equivalent of 60% of an uncoverted try, it really diminishes the value of the try & allows teams to win games with a negative approach. Surely it's not good for Rugby.

I really think they need to introduce a rule change that means you can only kick for goal if the penalty is awarded in the oppositions 22. It means for a team to get points from a penalty they actually need to be putting sufficient pressure on the line & when teams are awarded penalties in that 22 - 60 range they're still getting a huge advantage anyway because they're able to kick for touch & most of the time it will make it deep inside the 22.

Not only that but it would surely increase the tries to penalties ratio making the sport a better spectacle for all & more than half the situation where teams can kick points from subjective calls at the breakdown.

It seems to me like a win-win situation that will help these negative teams improve their game & actually pursue tries rather than penalties, you know, the object of the game. Drop goals would of course say the same because that's a piece of individual skill.

This is not just a rant because of the Sharks game, they did what they needed to win & good on them. It's a rant for Rugby

Fascinated to see some comments that Steve Walsh was allegedly biased towards the Highlanders. If so, this would be an amazing twist, as Otago and to a lesser extent Southland have had cause over many years to feel anxious and less confident whenever Walsh's name appears under the "match official" heading.

Anyway it's been a factor I've found I need to refer to, when I make my match picks.

Recorded the game then accidently heard the score this morning before viewing it. Decided not to waste my time. Lambie is a machine isn't he well done to the Sharks. Reports suggest the Highlanders dropped heaps of ball which is strange as that is something they have done really well all season. That many penalties would suggest the Sharks put us under plenty of pressure. Ah well back home and some easy games coming up you know Bulls, Hurricanes, Crusaders (gulp)

@scot... I agree, I think Heneke and his bulls clan are way too conservative to try something inspirational. Watch for "Old School" rugby from the Boks all over again.

Morne Steyn would be lucky to see much more game time with Lambie and Goosen around. Even Peter Grant has looked streets ahead of Steyn. The difficulty is getting the Management to realise that Lambie is a talented player that should be at 10. The fact that he covers so many other positions could spoil the player in the long run

Sharkyzulu says...

Is there a worse ref around than Steve "Oscar" Walsh, since Bryce Lawrence got frightened of being held to account? How many penalties were the Highlanders allwoed to concede with no further censure in the 2nd half? How about telling off Bismarck and saying he'd protect the players and literally 30 seconds later Bismarck cops a cheap shot in the throat... when there was already a penalty advantage, so no additional adbvantage to Sharks or sanction for the Highlanders. Imbecile Walsh doesn't even talk to the culprit, yet alone issue the appropriate sanction when the game was clearly getting testy.

We need impartial refs - or at least competent ones, or we end up with rants like mine about dubious reffing.

However, the Sharks miss smt in the midfield. Is Frans Steyn coming back to Durban?

Impressed by Ben Smith, maybe an All Black hopeful?

Not a bad game, I have never seen so many handling mistakes from a Kiwi side. Handling mistakes or handling without confidence.

Pat Lam the man.

The Beast was back at his best, dismantling Highlanders' scrum.

Adam Thomson must be a frustrated man, he plays like McCaw but he gets his and his own penalties.

The most hilarious moment was when Steve Walsh told the captains the he did not want to have a predominant role in the game. Steve, we know you.......

The second most hilarious moment was when BdP stuttered some justification to Walsh for being involved in some scuffles. BdP, you love that.

Pity for Ellison, hope it is not serious.

Morne will probably start for the Boks but this guy should be the 10 against England. Again, nothing against Steyn but Lambie has an educated boot and is one of the bravest tacklers I've seen, especially at his age. Plus his attacking mindset and composure, would love to see him at 10 with Frans at 12. Think we'll see Morne and JDV though.MartinMarais, this isn't a pro-Sharks rant, just want to see something different.
