Out for the season: Dominic Bird

Crusaders lock Dominic Bird has been ruled out for the season after sustaining a shoulder injury in Friday's win over the Waratahs in Christchurch.

The injury is a huge setback for the 22-year-old's Test ambitions as it was expected that he would be named on the replacements bench for the All Blacks' first Test against France at Eden Park on June 8.

But the Crusaders forward suffered a ruptured tendon in his left shoulder during the Crusaders' nail-biting 23-22 victory over the Sydneysiders.

The Crusaders confirmed via a press statement that Bird will undergo surgery on the injury.

"Following further medical assesment today the Crusaders can confirm that Bird has ruptured his left pectoralis major tendon and will require surgery later this week," the statement read.

Bird's injury means that Hurricanes second-rower Jeremy Thrush is now set to be named in All Blacks coach Steve Hansen's Test squad.

Meanwhile, the Crusaders will also be without the services of All Blacks hooker Corey Flynn for the rest of the season after he suffered a hamstring injury against the Waratahs.
