Chiefs flanker Tanerau Latimer has sighted a ruthless edge as being key to his side's turnaround in form at just the right time in Super Rugby 2014.

The holders, who are gunning for three straight titles, face the Brumbies in Canberra on Saturday knowing they face a tough ask to land the trophy.

Never before in the new conference format has a franchise that finished outside the top two places won the trophy, but with back-to-back wins in the league run-in, Latimer is confident his side can make that three at GIO Stadium this weekend.

"A bit of ruthlessness has been the key," Latimer told about their late-season form.

"Being ruthless when we've got teams under the pump because I don't think we had that part way through the season.

"I think we've just finally realised as a whole team what it takes (to win). It's better late than never. We're going into the final series with a bit of confidence."

He added on the travel factor: "To be honest I'd love to play a final away.

"We've done it from one and two (on the ladder) the past two seasons let's see if we can test the mental attitude of the boys and see if we can do it from fifth position."
