Going under the knife: Michael Kinga

Bay of Plenty suffered a blow, ahead of their ITM Cup campaign, when promising prop Michael Kainga was sidelined for the entire tournament due to a shoulder injury.

The 22-year-old, who played three matches for the Chiefs this season, will be undergoing surgery on July 26 which will rule him out for six months.

It's another setback to the province after an ankle injury in December sidelined former Waikato and Chiefs front-rower Josh Hohneck from all rugby for 2013.

Kainga also represented New Zealand U20s in 2011.

"I'm a bit gutted that I'm going to be missing ITM Cup and I'll be missing the finals with the Chiefs," he told Sportal

His operation is similar to the shoulder surgery undergone by Chiefs team-mate, All Blacks centre Richard Kahui.

"It's a hard lesson to learn, but having guys like Kaks [Kahui] around you who have had experience with injuries, they've sort of helped me and told me some stuff to do," said Kainga.

"It's a hard pill to swallow."
