I hear you on the matter of English football. I recall how, one week just a few seasons ago, England's four teams in Europe couldn't muster an England XI between them. But consider all the foreign props playing club rugby in Ireland -- and remember how a couple of months ago Ireland was unable to field a competent replacement tighthead at Twickenham. We might be heading the way of football.
Btw, congratulations on the Rongotai-ABs connection. That would be great for the school, and great for Ories.

You are making a lot of assumptions about the basis of people's criticism. Maybe that makes you feel better about the cases that people are talking about -- which for most of us are not the Pococks, the Coopers etc.
Australia does, as you note, have a lot of immigrants and a lot of ethnicities, and that does mitigate or explain a lot of rugby selections, but it doesn't cover all the bases. Australia is clearly in the market for foreign talent.

The ignorance is astonishing... all three Fainga'a brothers were born in a little town just outside Canberra. Digby Ioane moved to Australia when he was 5, Quade Cooper when we was 13 - hardly poached out from under the noses of the All Blacks now where they? Pocock moved to Australia aged 14 because his country was beset with civil war. Australia is a country of migrants (more than 400,000 Kiwis currently prefer to live in Australia than NZ); don't be so racist to assume that because someone has dark skin that he isn't Australian.
What's more, Super Rugby is a professional club sport, what does it matter who plays where? I see that SA now employs both Frenchmen and Americans in their teams...and what does it matter?

sandal, Ripia, Speight (underway) and this chap Ebersohn (future) all under same contract: show potential to play for the Wallabies in the future in order for the deal to go through - they have to declare themselves unavailable for their birth/home country to get a contract. Speight had to make himself unavailable for Fiji at RWC or that would have ruled him out for the prospect of a Wallaby jersey, which was the basis of his Super contract for Force and potentially Wallabies in 2013 (they bought him from an NZ ITM Cup team); Ripia was never going to make it to AB level, so made the same choice, as has Ebersohn.
Year ago I used to follow Chelsea football, I remember the day they fronted with an entire squad of buy-ins, not an English-born player in the starts or subs; I think they were the first club to do this; a pity if rugby ever goes the same way.

You're right. Though Australian practices haven't been quite as reprehensible as England's, no Aussie should have been ripping into England without also condemning his own rugby union. But the Aussies below the line are rather suave about it all. For instance, I have been told here that only the Rebels, a new team in development, are permitted to have more than two overseas players on contract. This ignores the fact that Australia's Super XV teams have a host of Kiwis. So many players whom I used to see running around in the ITM Cup, and whom I had assumed had gone to Britain/France/Ireland/Japan are now "Australian", it seems. That's what playing club rugby for three years in Australia does for you.

Ebersohn is effectively taking the place of NZer Willie Ripia ex Hurricanes/NZ Maori (sacked by Force for theft, one up on Quade!) who was recruited on same contract/residency/'potential to play for the Wallabies' deal.
Team chequebook for sure, scouting Currie Cup, ITM, for talent.

Interesting to note that whenever you watch matches people note the injury toll at #10 to sides like the Highlanders and Brumbies but never really heard it about the Force.
And for the South Africans, if you are so precious about keeping local talent, why does Michalak get imported?

you play where you were born or if a parent or gran parent is from another country, period. If tests are based on what a country can produce and what players were born there, then that's how it should be. Residency should be based on 5 years, not 3. In all honesty, rugby needs a major overhaul on criteria and how players can play for certain countries. Just cause a player isn't good enough to play for their country, shouldn't mean they can go live abroad for 3 years and play for that country. Look at England, what a joke. Look at NZ, how many players are actually born in NZ? At least the AB's have players they've groomed for more than 5 years. Rugby needs a global league, or at least 2, north and south. More tests (tours) and less club matches. Some guys are playing 30+ games a year!! Brutal. Just cause a country can't produce players, doesn't mean they can poach. Wales is doing just fine, along with Ireland, SA, Argentina, France. The whole point of test matches is to see which country produces the best team; not which country can find loop holes to make a team.

Flyhalf pecking order: Steyn, Lambie, Grant, Jantjies, Goosen, Pienaar, Ebersohn.
