Still sidelined: Flip van der Merwe

Bulls skipper Flip van der Merwe will not be fit in time to take part in his side's Super Rugby clash with the Chiefs on Saturday.

Van der Merwe sat out last Saturday's impressive derby victory over the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld, and is set to miss the visit of the defending champions a week later.

The good news for the Pretoria-based franchise is that the Springbok second-row, suffering from a hamstring strain, is expected to be passed fit for the Bulls' upcoming tour of Australasia.

In the lock's absence, veteran Victor Matfield took over the captaincy, with Paul Willemse partnering the World Cup winner in the engine room. Grant Hattingh filled Willemse's spot on the bench.

It is likely boss Frans Ludeke will opt for the same combination this weekend, as the Bulls look to string together a hat-trick of victories on home turf before heading south.

Elsewhere, Dean Greyling (calf contusion), Deon Stegmann (SC joint sprain), Francois Hougaard (politeal spasm knee), Bjorn Basson (gastro) and JJ Engelbrecht (lateral ankle sprain) have sustained minor injuries, and will miss several days' training.
