Pierre Spies: Penned a new three-year deal

Blue Bulls and Springboks number eight Pierre Spies has extended his contract with the Pretoria outfit until November 2015.

Spies, who is the Bulls' current Super Rugby captain, said it was an easy decision to make.

"The Blue Bulls is my rugby home and also the environment in which I grew up," he told the Blue Bulls' official website.

It will be an honour to call it my rugby home for the next three years again. I hope I can help write a memorable and successful part of the Bulls history during this time."

Blue Bulls CEO Barend van Graan also welcomed the news.

"Pierre is a second generation Bulls player and has already left a legacy with us," he said.

"To have Pierre around for the next three years, a period in which we aim to re-enforce ourselves as a team of excellence, is wonderful news and I am pretty sure our supporters will be very happy about this."

Bulls coach Frans Ludeke also expressed his delight.

"Pierre is a senior player and a leader who will have to carry a lot of responsibility in our vision and aim to once again become a title-winning team next season and beyond," he explained.

"I could not have asked for a better role model, person or player to help us become champions again."

I mis-read the headline as, "Spies resigns" and was hopeful.

Hate to be brutal but Spies missed a great career as a swimsuit model. Rugby just isn't his thing.

A super player when he started out--but then the illness. He has never been the same since and though still stands out against the weaker teams he is average to invisible in games against quality opposition. Gets picked on past form and reputation and not on current form, and as long as he gets picked why would he need to do anything different? Compare the impact Reid has for NZ and the Crusaders with the lack of impact Spies has for SA and the Bulls.

Good news for Bulls, the team needs some experience. Spies has still lots to offer. Not sure about his captaincy ability. Really hope bulls re-think their game strategy during the off season. Just kicked away to much possesion. Yes the game starts with forward dominance and finishes off with attacking backs.
