Blues boss Sir John Kirwan has confirmed Piri Weepu will be leaving them, with a move to London Welsh his reported destination.

Blues head coach Sir John Kirwan has confirmed that Piri Weepu is to leave the franchise, with London Welsh his reported destination for 2014/15.

According to Fairfax Media, the veteran scrum-half is expected to receive between $300,000 and $400,000 (NZ) annually on a two-year contract.

Weepu has dropped down the pecking order for both the Blues and New Zealand and with recent health issues, the big money switch is well timed.

"He's been a great Blues man the last four years. He's a fantastic team man," said head coach Kirwan, as Weepu leaves with his best wishes.

"He really cares about the players around him. He will be a big loss for us. We were keen for him to stay but we understand fully. He's had a couple of options on the go.

"He's been a great servant of the game. It's great for him to go overseas and get a new experience. He's helped us win a World Cup. He's been a great All Black. It's a good natural progression that he rolls on.

"He'll be remembered fondly. We'll all miss him. He's a special man."
