Star man: Beauden Barrett

Blues boss Sir John Kirwan has confirmed he won't be seeking the signature of flying Hurricanes pivot Beauden Barrett for 2015.

The former Japan and Italy head coach had made efforts to lure the precocious fly-half, arguably the form man in his position across New Zealand, to Auckland ahead of this year's Super Rugby season.

But Kirwan instead will place his faith in young upstarts Simon Hickey and Ihaia West, while confident he can tie down Ma'a Nonu, who is playing "exceptionally well" on a longer-term contract.

"We're really happy with Simon [Hickey] and Ihaia [West], so we're going to go internally," Kirwan told

"We're talking to both those guys and hopefully will have results [soon]. But our focus this week is the Crusaders and we just want to put all those things aside for a wee bit."

The former All Blacks legend was also pleased to welcome back fit-again Charles Piutau to his matchday squad.

"He's available, and when you've got someone of his quality around, getting him back out there is a real positive. We just need to go through the next couple of days and make sure he ticks off from 98 per cent to 100," added Kirwan.
