Sir John Kirwan is reportedly no longer interested in luring All Blacks fly-half Beauden Barrett to the Blues from the Hurricanes.
Simon Hickey and Ihaia West are the current options at number ten for the Blues, with Chris Noakes joining London Irish and Benji Marshall returning to the NRL.
Kirwan told Newstalk ZB that the Blues spoke with Barrett last year regarding a possible switch, with the number ten out of contract at the end of the season, but that no further talks have taken place in 2014.
The talented international is the top scorer in Super Rugby this season by some distance with 188 points.
The Blues announced on Monday that Leicester Tigers back Dan Bowden would be returning to New Zealand to join up with their squad next year.
