Beck still has Wales desire

Ashley Beck Wales v Samoa autumn internationals

Determined: Ashley Beck

Ospreys centre Ashley Beck is adamant he still wants to play for Wales despite pulling out of the national squad last month.

Beck declared himself unavailable for Warren Gatland before the victory over France, blaming a niggling hip injury and the intensity of Test training.

But the midfielder is just as determined to get back into the international frame.

"Of course I want to play for Wales," Beck told WalesOnline.

"Every player here wants to pull on that red jersey and I am no different.

"It is sapping the daylight out of me, to be honest, but I just have to deal with it.

"I had to pull out of the Wales set-up last month because my fitness wasn't right.

"I had torn a calf muscle last summer and did not really have a chance to do a lot of fitness work.

"The club have had a few injury problems in the centre this season, so I have been playing without having the opportunity to do that bit of extra training to catch up.

"Then my calf went again in November. It just meant that my body wasn't ready for international training or rugby.

"It is such an intense environment that you can't really do yourself justice in unless you are 100 per cent. I couldn't get my fitness up to the level where it needed to be in a short space of time.

"I don't know whether I'll need an operation on my hip. The Ospreys' physios are doing a brilliant job and the decision on whether to undergo surgery will depend on whether the hip plays up or not. I just have to look after it."
