Slam party pooped by rampant Ireland

Tommy Bowe going over for Ireland against England

The opener: Tommy Bowe

Ireland produced the performance that their whole nation had been waiting for on Saturday as they defeated old rivals England 24-8 at Aviva Stadium.

Declan Kidney's side were arguably three gears up from their showings in earlier rounds and consequently stunned the Grand Slam chasers, with tries from Tommy Bowe and Brian O'Driscoll sealing a much-needed win to lift team morale.

England in contrast were not quite at the races and will now face a slightly anxious wait to see how France and Wales pans out in Paris. A points difference of 26 points is the task for Wales if they are to claim the Six Nations crown at the death.

A recalled Jonathan Sexton was deadly in front of goal for the fired-up Irish and struck four penalties in all while the score for O'Driscoll brought his total championship try tally up to a record 25.

However a large amount of credit for the victory must go to their back-row of Jamie Heaslip, Sean O'Brien and David Wallace, with the latter duo immense both in contact and in the loose.

England seemed confident at kick-off, although Ireland's defence immediately held up well and they soon won a penalty after their pack dominated the opening scrum.

They won another too when England strayed offside at a line-out after six minutes, with Sexton kicking three points from in front of the posts. 3-0 it was to Ireland.

Martin Johnson's side lost promising possession when trying to break through the midfield soon after, and although Ireland's counter ended with a knock-on, their next brought a high tackle by an, at times angry, Chris Ashton on Sexton. He found the target and England found themselves 6-0 down after fifteen minutes.

Four minutes later Wallace ended the attempts of Ben Youngs to attack and the nine was then penalised at the scrum for knocking the ball out the hands of an opponent.

Sexton kicked for the corner and with territory established, Ireland worked the ball up and back down the line. Although O'Driscoll then crossed in the left-hand corner, Bowe's pass to the overlap was adjudged forward.

Still, there was the consolation of another three points for Sexton and the knowledge that they held the upper hand. It was to get worse for England.

Having been awarded a penalty in the 25th minutes that he would surely have normally taken, an out-of-sorts Tony Flood was found wanting with the boot.

Ireland pressed forward immediately and caught England flat-footed, with a busy Bowe this time making no mistake as he took a smart Sexton's pass to cross.

Sexton could not convert, but Flood could at least put England's first points on the board with a penalty just past the half hour. And boy did they need it.

They could not use that to fashion a response though; instead Wallace came close to scoring after England's backline were dispossessed dealing with a high kick.

Youngs had helped bundled Wallace into touch but he was then sin-binned for throwing the ball into the crowd and preventing the quick throw. Sexton kicked his fourth, with Wallace almost crossing one minute before the half time interval.

England appeared just as nervous at the start of the second half as Ireland piled on more heat, although they failed to make the man advantage pay off. But with Danny Care replacing Youngs it didn't matter as O'Driscoll picked up a loose ball to cross in the left-hand corner after 46 minutes, with Sexton converting.

Ashton then burst for the line but his final pass found Gordon D'Arcy. However, Ireland gifted their opponents a try on 52 minutes after a line-out went awry and Thompson took advantage, England's record-cap hooker racing over for a try.

Jonny Wilkinson added the two and it was around this time that England finally appeared to get their act together and consistently apply pressure themselves.

Ireland's defence remained unbreached, however, and with heavy rain falling, the hosts got some respite when Care struggled to control the ball on the wet surface.

Ireland remained ahead on territory in the closing ten minutes and try as England might, their increasingly tired-looking attacks never looked likely to prosper.

Victory was celebrated like a championship for Ireland but who can blame them? Success against their old foes and depriving them of a Grand Slam, the Six Nations title?

Man-of-the-match: Leinster flanker Sean O'Brien was once again immense for Ireland with his carrying strength killing England. David Wallace and Jonathan Sexton also deserve a big mention for their efforts but captain and centre Brian O'Driscoll gets the gong for his all-action showing that saw him become the top try-scorer in Five/Six Nations history.

Reddan had a stormer, think he should have been man of the match...

England we're really shown up today, an average team at best. Ireland took the foot off the accelerator after 50 mins and they did nothing, they only scored off our mistake.

show how bad this six nations was...

here some interesting quotes from the ireland vs england preview article:

timmo - "only worry for England is the competence of Bryce Lawrence on the day"...reckon they got other things to worry bout mate

rk_cambridge - "A draw?! England have this in the bag. A little discipline and they'll coast home. I'm hoping the boys in green can upset the apple-cart but I'm not putting money on it. " - nothings ever in the bag mate!

and me? well i predicted the english would win by 6...more than happy to be proven wrong!

Absolutely fanstastic! well done Ireland. Finally puts to rest all these comparisons to the 2003 England side, there were none to begin with really. This is a developing England side they will probably take another couple of years to rreally hit their straps.

Ireland were definitely on song. They have bags of experience and it showed. I suspect that a few of the younger England players went into the game with a bit too much arrogance and Young's misdemeanours, like trying to knock Reddan's feed and the yellow card stupidity pointed to a lack of awareness about what was a stake and what it would take to pull it off. Like the England camp said afterwards they're going to have to wear this scar.

@wazere, the reason for the happiness: probably relates to the sheer joy of getting to the level of performance thats required in a world cup year. Sending an overhyped England team back to the drawing board is gravy. I loved the English media talking up the likes of banahan, youngs and haskell. Set them up for a serious fall courtesy of a much more physical, more experienced and more talented Irish team. For a crumb of comfort, you always have ashton's swan dives to remember fondly. Probably encapsulates the style over substance nature of 2011 England side.

I do not understand why a perfectly valid Irish try was disallowed because an English player - justifiably yellow carded - took too long to leave the field. Surely that should have lead to a red card?

Awesome standard of rugby from Ireland, the first 40mins was the best display in 6N this year. The back row were world class, O'Driscoll obviously still has it. Not a bad performance by any of the players.

England were overhyped.. I think maybe Ireland and France, if they play to their best consistently, will be the only NH teams to trouble at the World cup.

One last thing. Stag, Kidney may be a genius, but he hasn't shown it this year. Regardless of one great performance, he still needs to pick up his game.

By the way, was the forward pass actually a forward pass? It looked flat at worst from where I was sitting.

Sexton incompetant? The ref. England's only obstacle? I hope you aren't a betting man my friend.

Great game. That's what Ireland are capable of.

Atmosphere was amazing. Absolutely brilliant.

Wow, what a match. So is kidney a genius now and are the Ireland the form NH team heading for the RWC? Are England a beaten docket who can't beat a Ireland team on the wane? Probably all are partially true but form goes out the window in these one off matches so hard to know what to read from it. Magnificent to see players like O'Brien, Sexton, Earls and Ross come of age

Why doesn't Ireland play like this always? Do they need a legendary enemy to play their hearts out? D'Arcy, Wallace, O'Callaghan... players that seemed to underperform in the previous matches today looked their best in years. Best was at his best (excuse the easy pun). O'Brien is an outstanding flanker. Ferris-O'Brien could be playing for the British Lions in 2013, that would be a fearsome pair.

The first scrums of the match were a bit strange, weren't they? Or maybe it was my three pints... One seemed to wheel more than 90 degrees, the English players did not seem to know what was going on... Some of the decisions by the ref were a bit surprising at the beginning and the English did not know how to stem the Irish tide. They knew the Irish were going to throw everything at them, even the kitchen sink, but they did not know how to hold firm.

Congratulations to Ireland. England were out-thought and out-muscled. Too much hype, apparently. The fat win against Italy made them feel too proud of themselves, the win against France was a typical display of mortar and bricks, and later they did not deserve to beat Scotland, so their supposed flair was nothing really. In this match England paid for their errors. They are far from being an accomplished team.

The centres lack creativity. Banahan should not be wearing 13. It was unlucky Palmer was injured. Hartley and Corbisiero were not up to the level demanded in the match. Haskell? Hape? I feel for Easter, he's such a great player and the saw his team go down in such a manner... This was not England's day. When do Flood and Wilko miss such penalty attempts?

Johnno has some work to do, still. They are not the finished article. This loss can be helpful, though. They can build their team better in view of the RWC.

Shame that Ireland were cheated of victory over Wales. England looked quite one dimensional and lacking in thought, although they did look fit and powerful - in fact they looked like a Blue Bulls 2nd XV. I'm not sure how far England have actually come as France (variable), Italy and Scotland are not exactly world class. I think that since being destroyed by the power of the SA 'A' XV a few months ag, Ireland have been the only decent test. The 3N teams will not be shaking in their boots - England will play predictable route one rugby at the RWC and score through forward drives and penalties. If Ireland fire on all cylinders they will pose more of a threat. Well done Ireland, we all know that you should have more points. I encourage all England fans to watch the Crusaders v Sharks game at Twickenham and to support the earthquake victims - first Super Rugby game away from the south.

Right Mr Johnson, time and time again you go on about winning before performance, well if you get the performance right first then surely the win will follow, England need to start playing from the first second, just like against New Zealand they only switched on after 20mins, I've never seen more handling errors in one match by one team England!!!!! Get it sorted Johno!!!! Lets get the basics sorted first, and finally why on earth Hape is starting for England over the likes of Allen and Twelvetrees I will never know, if England go to the WC with the Hape and Tindall we won't go any further that the 1/4 finals.
