England toil to defeat Italy

England were left frustrated by a resurgent Italian performance as the hosts kept their Grand Slam hopes alive with an 18-11 win.

Six penalties from Toby Flood kept England ahead on the scoreboard as Italy recovered from a 15-3 deficit at the start of the second half to leave Twickenham on edge in a dramatic finish.

The Azzurri resembled the side that were so impressive in their opening game of the championship against France - hounding England in defence and creating ample attacking opportunities in the second half against an opponent who they have never defeated.

Only desperate defence from England going into the final 10 minutes kept the hosts clinging on to the lead, with all thoughts of a first Grand Slam in a decade put firmly on hold.

England signalled their intent early on with a penalty from Toby Flood after just three minutes - the Leicester fly-half coming in for the injured Owen Farrell.

Mike Brown came close to the opening try after Luciano Orquera's kick was charged down, but the ball eluded him as he tried to make the grounding.

The hosts enjoyed all the possession throughout the opening minutes but were unable to find the opening try, Flood settling for another three points to leave England 6-0 up after 15 minutes.

Italy responded on their first visit to England's half with a penalty from Orquera after an effective driving maul, lifting the voices of the visiting fans. The Azzurri supporters grew even louder minutes later when Alessandro Zanni burst down the left touchline after Sergio Parisse's inside flick - only for the ball to be knocked on.

England's large swathes of possession created another try-scoring opportunity for the hosts, but Flood's attempted score was ruled out. Italy then lost scrum-half Edoardo Gori to the sin-bin for taking out Flood off the ball.

The hosts' power at the scrum was again capitalised on by Flood, who added a further three more points after a fine break from Brown to leave England 12-3 up going into the interval after a frustrating half for the home fans.

Another Flood penalty at the start of the second half extended the gap and left Italy chasing the scoreboard, Orquera responding with a penalty of his own after England collapsed at the scrum.

Care's sloppy box kick was then taken out of the air by Andrea Masi and Orquera's delicate chip across to the left wing was snapped up by Luke McLean to score in the corner.

Giovambattista Venditti then carried down the right touchline to leave English tacklers on the deck, but Orquera's resultant penalty attempt fell well wide to the right - failing to make the most of a passage of play where England lost control.

The introduction of Ben Youngs steadied Flood and England crept back to a seven-point advantage thanks to another penalty from the Leicester number 10.

Italy however continued to produce some of their best rugby in this year's championship, finding space down the left-hand side through McLean.

It meant that England were clinging on desperately to their lead as time ticked away, until a knock-on five metres from their own try line led to a collective sigh of relief from the 82,000 crowd.

Twickenham expected a thrashing - the humbled crowd left booing and counting their blessings.

Man of the Match: A whole host of Italian candidates to choose from in defeat, with Alessandro Zanni getting the nod ahead of his captain Parisse, Masi and winger McLean.

Moment of the Match: Courtney Lawes' crucial line-out steal with two minutes remaining that helped England ease the Italian pressure.

Villain of the Match: Starting his first Test for some time, Toby Flood may have kicked well off the tee but struggled to get England's backs firing.

I think the BBChave finally got something right by bringing in SCW. The guy talks a load of sense, far more than can be said for the rest

One thing all referres haven't policed well is the tackler rolling away. Forget all the hands in the ruck, the tackler not rolling is the first penalty at every ruck and that is what I think is slowing the games down

Italy played well today. England short on ideas. No penetration. Ashton should be dropped for the next game. Goode looked lost with his hands on the ball

Very very well done Italy, you deserved a tie at least.

Frankly, referring was blatantly in favour of the English in the last ten minutes.

in each ruck, there were at least 18 English hands trying to slow the ball.

England were poor in this game but well done to Italy for making it so difficult for England.

I feel really disappointed by this England performance. We looked rattled at times and the early promise of the first 15 minutes didn't last.

We should not have wasted a couple of try scoring opportunities that we had, but we lost composure.

Ashton had a mare. But that said, no one really shone for England today.

We scraped home today but will need big improvement for next week.

England have looked clueless in attack since their first game. If power doesn't work there is no plan B!

Clancy was his usual self - all over the place and overly confident. Hope he realises what a pratt of himself he made after having talked to Owens!

Well then here we are looking at the last match, all Wales need to do is win by eight points or more to walk away with the championship. Judging by the England performance today that is more than achievable, where now are all the harbingers of doom who had wrote the Welsh off just a few games ago. Methinks there may be a lot of humble pie to be eaten by a few PR posters this time next week.

Oh dear. A very exciting game though. England were their own worse enemies becuase they just couldn't finish off. Scrums were equal dan cole had the bet game of the tournament so far scrumaging wise becuase the last 3 he has fallen under a lot of pressure to cian, grant and domingo. He is going to have probably james next week (gethin is injured) so he is going to have to up his game or we will trounce all over them. Put it this way we have adam and england haven't got a dominant scrummaging loosehead as well as vunipolo played today adam is on a completely different level. Italy were outstanding in the second half and were very unlucky not to draw but all credit to england as they dod what they had to do.

Im hopeing for a good match next week.

Also can either wales, england ireland or scotland try and adopt parisse for the lions. One of world rugby's best players by far.

PR, i disagree with your choice of 'moment of the match':

i would have said the moment of the match was when the italians scored the try, and everyone in england suddenly shat themselves...

LondonWasp says...

that was horrid to watch

why can't england tackle properly?!!!!?

cant even manage a single try against Italy...

God help us against the Welsh.....

Well done italy, you suddenly remembered who you were, which is something you weren't doing since the win over france. you were by far the more passionate team

Hope Lancaster gives our players a proper bollocking and whip them into shape. there is still time!

Well first off well done Italy, played more like they played in the aurtum, and against France in te 2nd half.Caused England all sorts of problems .As for England butchered 2-3 try scoring chances in the 1st half, and ddnt look as composed as they have been went up one on one rather than 2 against one as they have been doing and the offload that extra pass before hitting the line was missing,,defence was good ,but then it had to be.England will have to play better next week,in Cardiff, but then we and they know they can Maybe their head was thinking of next week, rather than today??.As for Italy look back to their best in the 2nd half ,and at home against a faltering Ireland will definatly fancy their chances, wouldnt be surprised at a italian victory at all.

Italy were the best team on the pitch and were robbed by Clancy. A torrent of penalties awarded to England by the clueless ref and still they did not manage to break away.

Shame Italy did not win.

By far the best Italy ever seen at Twickenham! What a pity for that lineout stoled by hosts with two minutes to go, but they played a great defense in the first half and with great intensity in the second. I just hope they will not miss that kind of approach in the last clash with Ireland.

That was a nailbiting last 10 ! To say England were poor would be disingenuos to Italy who i thought were brilliant. Strangely i think England will be better focused and in a better frame of mind going to Cardiff with this close call behind them than if they had won easily so i am not to displeased in that respect.

England can count themselves lucky and they owe a big one to Mr Clancy. I don¿t like to talk about referees but there were like 4,675 hands in the ruck (I think I started counting them after the fifteenth phase of Italian play, no kidding) by the English defence during the five minutes of sustained pressure by the Italians on the English line between the 70th and the 75th minute. Also the last penalty awarded to England virtually in front of the posts was more than a harsh one (Clancy shouted ¿roll away¿ when the Italian defender had already rolled away and then he gave the penalty to England for no reason). The English slowed Italian ball down all the time.

Great match to watch for a neutral like me. Parisse and Zanni are excellent players. The commitment and enterprise of the whole Italian team are second to none. Orquera orchestrated the play well, Gori was fast, the new lock Furno was outstanding, Ghiraldini had a monster game again... And what can you say about Masi¿ Luke McLean was never my cup of tea but man he played well today¿

Italy still lack the favour of the referees, who seem to be a bit shy when it comes to giving them what they deserve except when they play against France.

Every team is allowed an off game once in a while. England were given a huge scare today and may have lost Parling for some time (let¿s hope not). Great work by Robshaw. He leads by example. A true captain for any team.

Wales is no match for England on current form, I¿m afraid, but I¿d love to see the fiercest encounter in Cardiff next week. Let¿s hope all the teams have left the best for last.

Woo, finally a 6 Nations game worth watching!

England must have felt the wind of the cannonball very, very close to their ears... Congratulations to the Italians, they played even better than against the French - and against far more committed opposition!

Hopefully they can replicate this form next week and send Ireland where they belong - at the bottom, on par with the French...
