Lee Dickson Northampton Saints v Exeter Chiefs

Entertaining game: Saints win

Northampton made it back-to-back wins in the Aviva Premiership with a 24-21 victory over Exeter on Sunday.

Saints claimed all five points from the home fixture thanks to tries from Christian Day, Phil Dowson, Luther Burrell and Dylan Hartley.

A nip-and-tuck first fifteen minutes was halted by Day, who was on the end of a break launched following a wayward kick from Ignacio Mieres.

Ryan Lamb was wide with the conversion, but he was on target with the extras ten minutes later as the visitors added to their lead courtesy of a try from Dowson, which was scored after Lamb had made the initial burst to set up the attack.

The Chiefs had it all to do, but they roared back in the closing stages of the first period to take an unlikely lead with them into the interval.

They got the ball rolling on 30 minutes when great work down the right from Josh Tatupu created the opportunity for Phil Dollman to score. Mieres was on target with the extras, and added two penalties before half-time to make it 13-12 to the Chiefs as the teams headed down the tunnel.

The Chiefs added to their lead with ten minutes of the second half played courtesy of a third penalty from Mieres, but the rest of this contest belonged to the Saints.

Burrell breached the Exeter defence following a sustained period of pressure to put the hosts back in front, and less than ten minutes later they had a cushion.

Hartley completed a neatly worked line-out move to make it 22-16, with replacement Stephen Myler's conversion putting eight points between the sides.

The Chiefs rallied in the closing stages of the game, but, by this stage, time was against them, and, when Matt Jess got over in the corner with seconds remaining following a flowing combination of passes, it was little more than consolation at the Gardens.

Wood not on form yet. Looked tired and driven back in several tackles. Losing his collisions. Johnson looked better for England spot right now with Robshaw. Thought Exeter were better team.

@ Stumpy

problem is that Dickson didn't show that in the England shirt when he was the "form 9" last season.

the best 9 is not always the best choice. the 9+10 combination is what we need to look at. Dawson suited Wilko and Youngs suits Flood. If we have Dickson as first choice then I dont think we play Flood who is still the best attacking 10 in the English game. Who is next in line? Farrel? I'd rather support Wales. Burns? too Flaky. Lamb? a liability! Ford? Not tested in the AP yet.

Also, what does Dicksn bring to a game if he is a replacement? He is the perfect option to close a game out, but he isn't a match changer so I feel care and youngs will rekindle their fight for the 9 shirt.

Got to say a very enjoyable game to watch. Both sides showed good attacking invention/creativity,and put on a show.In the end it was the Saints forward powerplay that won it for them.lets hope we have more games of the same quality, espically if the weather gets worse as its bound to.

He's Vasily Artemyev. Russian international and joined Saints after the last world cup. Quick with good feet.

Pleased to see Saints win and get 5 points.

It pleased with Saints discipline which need sorting or it will no doubt cost us this season. And Saints desperatley need a reliable, ideally world class 10.

Not sure many teams will get winners bonus vs Exeter. Not sure many teams will get losers bonus point at Franklin gdns. Good result for both. Perhaps both finalists in the making.

I think Dickson showed today why he should be the starting England 9 over Youngs and Care. Dickson may not be able to create moments of magic like the other 2 can, but the quickness of ball he provides means other teams can not defend against that intensity. He consistently makes right desicions too, he needs to be the starting England 9.
