Back in business: Tom Wood

Northampton coach Jim Mallinder felt his side were "lucky to take the points" from their 24-19 win over Gloucester in the Aviva Premiership opener.

The Saints were brilliant in the first half but survived a second-half battering - playing with 13 towards the end - to emerge with the points.

"We were playing away from home at a club notorious for being difficult to beat on their ground. We didn't have to overplay but we lost the ball at times which was annoying," said Mallinder.

Tom Wood came through his first full match since March following a toe injury and Mallinder revealed how much they missed the England flanker.

"We have been drip-feeding him back in over the last couple of weeks and he is really pleased," he said.

"We really missed him last season. We are just being cautious with him and we are pleased he is back and playing well. He is important to the team.

Good to see Tom Wood back. Hope to see him perform well for Saints and in turn for England.
