Fly-half spot no concern to Richards

No worry: Dean Richards

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby, Dean Richards, has said he is not worried by his side's apparent lack of fly-half options.

The Falcons travel to face Worcester Warriors on Saturday, who are currently rooted to the foot of the Premiership table.

Both sides have found wins desperately hard to come by in their opening fixtures, though the Falcons did emerge victorious 15-14 over Sale Sharks back in September.

In that clash, Rory Clegg came on in place of Phil Godman in the pivot position, and subsequently kicked the winning goal.

Youngster Joel Hodgson is also challenging for game time in the number ten jersey, after the Falcons lost New Zealander Jimmy Gopperth to Leinster in a move agreed back in March.

Clegg has started the Falcons' last two matches, but Richards has stated he is comfortable with the current fly-half situation.

"I am not concerned about the number 10 position, because it is not always the fly-half from whom the accuracy comes. Obviously there is an element of game control that does come from there, but it is not just the 10 who provides that," Richards told the Chronicle in the wake of Sunday's narrow defeat at the hands of Gloucester.

This game saw the Falcons claim their first try of the Premiership season, but Richards claimed he was less concerned with breaking the duck than maintaining the quality that saw his side breach the whitewash.

"I hadn't even thought about it, because we were always going to score at some stage," added Richards.

"That is not the issue - the issue is replicating what got us that first try in terms of energy, accuracy and execution, and doing it regularly.

"We have just got to make sure we tidy up our game, and make sure that when we do have that volume of possession we properly understand how to use it."
