Six tries: Quins shoot down Falcons

Harlequins continued their best start to a season with a 13th consecutive win in all competitions, brushing Newcastle aside 39-8 in the Aviva Premiership.

It took the London club nine points clear of second-placed Saracens, with wing Seb Stegmann scoring two of their six tries.

Defeat kept Newcastle anchored to the foot of the table, nine points adrift of Worcester.

Harlequins enjoyed most of the early pressure, and just before the 20 minute mark they took the lead courtesy of a Nick Evans penalty.

Eight minutes later they were ten up, after Seb Stegmann beat two defenders to cross for a try, with Evans adding the tricky conversion from out wide.

The Falcons had struggled to gain an early foothold in the game, but hit back with five minutes of the half remaining when Jeremy Manning finished a move from the scrum to cross. Jimmy Gopperth missed the conversion.

But the hosts were able to stretch their lead to ten just before half-time when Care strode over after his team-mates had turned over the ball. Evans was wide with the conversion but Quins led 15-5 at the interval.

Following the restart, Gopperth missed the opportunity to narrow the league leaders' advantage to seven and, after Newcastle had been reduced to 13 men following with the sin-binnings of Chris Pilgirm and Tim Swinson,

Harlequins scored another try through Luke Wallace. Evans added the conversion to make it 22-5. Gopperth got Newcastle to within two converted tries with a penalty on the hour mark, but Harlequins put the game beyond their visitors with three tries in the final 15 minutes.

First, Mike Brown crossed following good work by the forwards, Stegmann got his second when he was first to a Brown grubber kick, and then James Johnston rounded things off with a try in the final minute to make it 39-8.
