Brian Mujati on his way to scoring for Northampton against Wasps

Fine score: Brian Mujati

Northampton produced an impressive showing to defeat Wasps 24-13 on Sunday, a result that takes them up to sixth spot in the Aviva Premiership.

Saints replicated last term's forward demolition at the same venue as the Wycombe-based side failed to contain the power of the visiting pack.

Props Soane Tonga'uiha and Brian Mujati went over for well-taken scores, while Ryan Lamb kicked four penalties and a conversion as Northampton continued their resurgence.

With two sides who are coming into form, it was Wasps who started brighter. However, despite continually breaking the Northampton gainline, they were unable to put any points on the board. And when Tim Payne decided to take matters into his own hands by throwing a limp punch - the loosehead receiving 10 minutes in the sin-bin - Lamb kicked a penalty to move the Saints in front.

Wasps hit back when a superb pick-up and pass from winger Christian Wade sent Riki Flutey over for the opening try. Nicky Robinson missed the conversion and Saints retook the lead straight from the kick-off when Lamb scored his second three-pointer.

The tens then traded kicks before Lamb extended Saints' advantage to 12-8 at the break.

Tonga'uiha got the away side off to the ideal start in the second-half when he stretched over, although there was more than a hint of a forward pass by Courtney Lawes in the build-up.

His propping partner Mujati then steamrollered fly-half Robinson to go over for a converted try under the posts before Wasps lock Ross Filipo touched down for a consolation score.
