Andy Goode v Leicester2

Andy Goode: 17 points

Wasps boss Dai Young heaped praise on Andy Goode after the fly-half inspired his side to a 22-12 victory against former club Leicester Tigers.

Goode finished with a 17-point haul as the defending Premiership champions were sent packing from Adams Park for the sixth year in a row.

Christian Wade went over for the only try of the game in the first half but it was Goode who stole the show, pulling the strings throughout.

And two opportunist drop goals proved vital in the final reckoning as Tigers were denied a losing bonus point to leave Young purring.

"A lot of people have knocked Andy in the early part of the season but I always felt bringing him to the club was the right thing to do," he said.

"I thought he was outstanding today, steering the ship but kicking the important goals as well.

"There was a lot of commitment, a lot of effort and a lot of desire out there under some fierce pressure for parts of it.

"But I asked the boys to find a way to win, the result was always going to be far more important than the performance.

"Up front was tough for us on occasion, we knew they are a wiley old bunch but our defence was outstanding and was probably the difference between winning and losing."

For the Tigers it was a case of what might have been as they could only muster four penalties from the boot of Owen Williams.

In what was Richard Cockerill's first game back on the sidelines the Welford Road outfit had 13 players out injured and another five away with England.

But the director of rugby refused to make any excuses for his side who had certainly had their chances to get something from the game, particuarly in the second half when Carlo Festuccia was sin binned for the home side.

"It was a soft try, with the conditions as they were we probably needed to make more of the advantage of the wind and we didn't," he said.

"The effort was there, we obviously have some players missing but no excuses from us.

"It was a pretty poor game, the weather conditions didn't help, and we did not take the opportunities that came our way.

"Wasps are not a poor side, sometimes you have to take a measured view but we could and should have played better."
