Leicester Tigers centre Niki Goneva has been ruled out for four to six weeks in the latest injury to hit the English champions.
Richard Cockerill's side are undergoing a crisis in midfield with Anthony Allen, Manu Tuilagi and Matt Smith all already sidelined.
With their resources stretched at centre, Cockerill has turned to former Crusaders back Dan Bowden along with new recruit Terrence Hepetema.
"Dan has done a good job for us," said Cockerill to the Leicester Mercury.
"Terrence did some good things against Treviso. He made some mistakes, too, but he is a young player.
"Adam Thompstone has played a fair bit at 13, so the options are there for us.
"[Dan]'s a very good footballer," added Cockerill.
"He offers different qualities to Anthony Allen and has met our style halfway. He has been very good in his defensive duties and leadership.
"He has been good for Niki Goneva and also for Terrence at the weekend. Dan's had more opportunity to play. Part of that is circumstances, part of that is the way he has applied himself.
"You have to be able to fit into what we do and that does take a bit of time."
