Karl Dickson: Expects a tough Heineken Cup pool

Harlequins scrum-half Karl Dickson admits his side welcomes the start of the Heineken Cup after sluggish form during the start of the Premiership season.

Quins' focus turns to the Heineken Cup for a fortnight with Pool 2 clashes against Scarlets and last year's runners up Clermont to prepare for.

Dickson and company, the Aviva Premiership champions of two seasons ago and semi-finalists last year, have lost three of their first five games of the season including last weekend's shock reversal against London Irish.

But a new competition brings a fresh slate and Dickson is confident he and his team-mates are more than ready to set the record straight.

"We have moved on from it now, we have drawn a line under it and we're looking forward to Scarlets this weekend," he said.

"We would probably say it has been a mixed bag. We probably haven't hit the ground running as we wanted to but we're not in a bad position in the league.

"It's a marathon, not a sprint and we are looking forward to a different competition in the Heineken Cup.

"We don't really know much about Scarlets, obviously they are in a completely different league to us. It gives us the opportunity to part with the Premiership for a while and focus on something else and go out there and really express ourselves.

"Any Heineken Cup pool is going to be tough. We have two away trips to France with both of them pushing for a top-four spot in their league so it's going to be tough but we're confident, we believe in ourselves and it's the Heineken Cup - you never know what's going to happen.

"We go into every game with confidence. Scarlets this weekend have some quality players in there with Rhys Priestland, and Jonathan Davies in the centres but they play a similar type of rugby to what we do so it should be a good game all-round for the spectator and hopefully we'll put a good performance in."

Dickson made his first start of the season against the Exiles at the Madejski Stadium but for the most part has had to play second fiddle to England star Danny Care.

But with the November internationals looming on the horizon Dickson knows that his chance to shine is coming and he has vowed to be ready.

"It's always a tough ask - Danny's a good player," he added.

"He'll be going away with the internationals soon and all I want to do is keep working hard and when I get my opportunity, do what I can to try and keep it.

"You can't really do a lot more than that. I love playing the game with all the boys but it's a good time for me to keep the body fresh, ready to start when he's not here.

"Everyone wants to play and being at the club I know the situation. I just look forward to when he goes away and get my opportunity - and while he is away just playing as well as I can so when he does come back it's a tough choice to make."
