Harlequins prop Paul Doran-Jones is under no illusions that he will walk into the team this season but believes that is an excellent sign ahead of 2013/14.
The former Northampton Saint, who is set to take over from James Johnston this year, believes competition for places is ongoing at the Stoop.
"I don't think for one second that I'll automatically take the shirt from guys who had it already," said Doran Jones to premiershiprugby.com.
"They are doing really well, the likes of Will Collier and Kyle Sinckler, they are playing really good rugby so it is not a case of me just coming in and taking the shirt - I've got to earn it.
"It's great that we have got that strength in depth and not just in one position. We've got a really good, young, talent squad with that blend of older lads as well. It's a good squad I think that can challenge on multiple fronts.
"We all set goals at the start of the season and there are obviously things you want to achieve personally, but I tend to keep those to myself really.
"I just want to get back playing; I was used sparingly after New Year for Northampton, so I just want to get some decent rugby played.
"I enjoyed the tour to Argentina with England, so it's trying to take the momentum on from that I guess."
