Mike Brown celebrates Toulouse v Harlequins Heineken Cup

Two tries: Mike Brown

Harlequins recorded the biggest upset of the Heineken Cup season so far with a 31-24 victory over four-time champions Toulouse in France on Sunday.

The visiting English side outscored their star-studded hosts three tries to two in a stunning display of grit and determination with full-back Mike Brown grabbing a brace.

It would be hard to argue that Quins were the stronger side on the day but, unlike the home side, they took every chance presented to them, counter-punching and hustling their way to victory against seemingly insurmountable odds.

A losing bonus point means that Toulouse retain the lead in Pool Six, just one point clear of Quins.

Against all expectations Harlequins held a 15-10 lead at half time thanks to tries from Brown and hooker Joe Gray.

Indeed the first 38 minutes were somewhat of a nightmare for Toulouse who, despite cutting the Quins defence apart as much as the pitch which was falling to pieces, were unable to get the scoreboard ticking as Luke McAlister missed three easy penalties in the first 20 minutes and Vincent Clerc had a try ruled out for a forward pass.

The pressure eventually told though as lock Yoann Maestri scored under the sticks just before half time.

But Toulouse's bad day at the office would continue in the second period as hooker William Servat twice crossed only to be denied by the TMO, who couldn't see the ball under the pile of bodies.

Meanwhile Nick Evans kept the scoreboard ticking and Brown went over for his second, forcing Toulouse to play high-risk catch-up rugby...and ultimately fall short.

The game started with former All Black pivots McAlister and Evans trading penalties. But it was the latter who stole the limelight by orchestrating the visitors' first try.

The Kiwi fly-half's neat little grubber through was superbly collected and grounded by Brown.

Evans was unable to add the extras, but it didn't matter much as McAlister was having an off day with the boot, leaving nine easy points by the wayside.

And Toulouse were made to pay when excellent hands sent Harlequins hooker Gray over after another probing kick from Evans.

In typical fashion Toulouse hit back as Maestri touched down after flank Jean Bouilhou picked the perfect line to ghost through the Quins defensive line.

The hosts continued to have most of the possession and territory in the second period, and were duly rewarded as scrum-half Jean-Marc Doussain added successive penalties to give Toulouse a four-point lead.

No sooner had the game re-started but Tom Williams stole possession from Clerc and the attack ended with Easter off-loading to Brown, who scampered through for his second try.

Evans added the conversion and a penalty before Nick Easter was sin-binned for Quins' repeated spoiling tactics at the breakdown.

Toulouse took advantage as Doussain went over in the corner.

However, he missed the crucial conversion and Evans slotted two further penalties to complete a remarkable victory.

The scorers:

For Toulouse:
Tries: Maestri, Doussain
Con: Doussain
Pens: McAlister, Doussain

Pens: Evans 4

@Rugbynut

The law which required him to give a red card to Warburton said he must force / spear / drive / drop the player into / onto the ground. Skinner did not do that. For all other dangerous lifting tackles the referee is allowed to award a penalty or yellow. A penalty was a good decision in my opinion. Don't criticise the referee if you don't know the rules.

@Damo, a Munster man? Whatever you are, you're a fool. Are you seriously suggesting that a missed forward pass in one match somehow makes a forward pass in an another NOT forward?

Toulouse lost because they missed 3 easy penalties in the first half. Those plus the Maestri try would have knocked the morale out of Quins by half time.

The pitch is the TFC's responsibility: don't know why ST insist on playing at the stadium when their own ground can host 19,000 odd.

Rolland was very good: the Skinner red and the other warning more than justified.

Leinster v Toulouse final.

Brilliant game, great play from Quins - took their chances well.

Am I the only one to think the ref had a bad game? He gave red against Warburton for a spear tackle yet ignored Skinner (?) being lifted illeagally at a maul and then left to drop on his head!!! Also what about the offside tackle on Brown? Clear professional foul and deserved a yellow card! Once again, a ref being biased and inconsistent. Is this a French plot bearing in mind Rolland's parentage?

I wonder what match some of the above watched. I think that Quins haven't learnt from bloodgate. I have not witnessed such blatent cheating on and off arugby pitch ever. Rollands was disgraceful. The Quins three's were off side for most of the game which allowed them to disrupt the French sides three's movements and whilst Easter makes the most of his attributes he should have been penalised for lying over the ball or interfering with the ball on the ground in every ruck he managed to reach! I blame Rolands. Serious questions must also be asked over the two incidents off the pitch which resulted in the ref having to interfere! Taking into account 'bloodgate' I feel strongly that Quins MUST be kicked out of this competition!!!

Well played Quins, but I have to disagree with some posters about ref. Inconsistancy, how can forward passes be only seen for one team, why no red card for tip tackle, why was Quins doctor allowed to interfere with the ball. Rolland is often quoted as saying that he can only ref what he sees, I think he needs some glasses!

Many are saying Toulouse still looked the better team. Perhaps. But heh, well done Quins! You can only finish everything in front of you and then defend your heart out when you are under the cosh. Quins must keep going with their free-flowing fast tempo attacking game. It can be great to watch when it's working well, and does put other teams under pressure; hard to defend against.

well done quins ye deserved to win, O'Shea shares are gone through the roof, as for the idiot saying forward pass did you see the first game???????? Replacements: 16 Chris Brooker, 17 Nic Mayhew, 18 Kyle Sinckler, 19 Charlie Matthews, 20 Luke Wallace, 21 Richard Bolt, 22 Ben Urdapilleta, 23 Tom Williams left nothing on the field for their team big congrats, and I am a Munster man

Fantastic display from Mr Rolland today. Harlequins learned so much in a week - defensive effort was second to none this weekend.

Disgraceful pitch - never witnessed one as bad in the Heineken Cup.

Am I the only one who saw the forward pass [throw] before Evans kich-through leading to the try?

Well done Harlequins. I hope these 2 teams will qualify (they should) as they are with Leinster the 3 teams the most enjoyable to watch.

As for Toulouse, I am not too surprised they lost. Their mindset was not set up correctly against a very good team. You can't win a game if you have 3 tries against you.

Great refereeing. Good decisions over all and excellent, clear communication with the players.

Evans was great, so was Brown and Hopper was fantastic. Was great in attack and managed to make a load of difficult tackles and big hits he shouldn't have been able to. Brilliant.

Red card was ridicolous... if Skinner hadnt touched the ball, it would have hit the bench or stand - in any case, a quick lineout would have been impossible, however, quins should get a warning for their doctor touching the ball early on. Besides that, really good win for quins.

What happened to the pitch? It took a whole host of gardeners and a series of "time-outs" in the first half to keep the playing surface safe.

I guess you have to say well done Nick Evans, as cool as ice today!

For us not a total disaster we still go 5 match points to 4, so as good as both sides winning thier respective home games which of course they didn't! but the math is the same.

McCalister, though no one single individual loses a game (we butchered alot of chances today), an absolute terrible display at 10, reminded me of B James vs Leinster a few years back, terrible. Please oh please start with Beauxis next time and we can still hope to win this thing, but not with such unreliable kicking and poor tactical kicking as was on offer today.

Also I hope there is some small sanction for the off field antics we saw, totally unnecassary.
