Akapusi Qera scores Gloucester v Leicester

Try time: Akapusi Qera scores for Gloucester

Gloucester outscored Leicester three tries to two at Kingsholm to claim a crucial 27-21 Premiership victory on Saturday.

Gloucester edged a classic encounter, overcoming a double sin-binning in the second-half to hang on for the win.

Both teams headed into the match on the back of victories in European competition and went on to play their part in a thrilling contest on their return to Aviva Premiership action.

The hosts got off to the best possible start, with Charlie Sharples getting on the end of Freddie Burns' grubber to cross. Burns added the conversion and knocked over a penalty on nine minutes, after Toby Flood had got Leicester off the mark with the boot.

The visitors then narrowed Gloucester's advantage to two when the TMO ruled that Scott Hamilton's dive for the right corner was a try, but Flood's conversion miss preserved the hosts' lead.

There was little between the sides at this early stage, and it took an excellent piece of improvisation from Burns to increase the gap between the two teams.

He snapped up his own chip over the Leicester defence to score, before converting, to make it 17-8 to Gloucester with a quarter of the match played.

Flood's penalty just moments from half-time put the Tigers within a converted try and it was to remain close for the majority of the second half.

Burns and Flood exchanged penalties seven and nine minutes after the restart, before James Simpson-Daniel broke to lay the platform for Akapusi Qera to score a vital try.

But then, following a double Gloucester sin-binning for Jimmy Cowan and Robert Cook, Leicester found a way back into the match courtesy of a penalty try awarded at scrum.

Flood's conversion made it 27-21 but, despite the numerical advantage, the Tigers were unable to strike again. And with a full compliment back on the field, Gloucester were able to hold on during a frantic final 15 minutes to secure a thrilling win.

Tigers really should have been more clinical in the 11 minutes of yellow cards, albeit Glos did everything they could to run the clock down without the ref picking up on any of it (fair play to them).

The balance of the back row is really hurting us atm, and gilt even worse when Crane had to go off. How much bad luck can a team have in terms of back row injuries?!

JSD was fantastic, and IMHO has been overlooked for far too long. I think he is much better than sharpies, who has speed but nowhere near the vision and skill that JSD has.

Burns was impressive with ball in hand and with a gap in front of him, but I'm afraid he still has a lot to learn in terms of game management. Believe me I'd rather have anyone than Farrell in the team, but I'm not sure Burns is the answer yet. Ford and Burns will have their day and there will be a terrific scrap for the 10 shirt in the future.

Jimmy Cowan is a thug and a cheat and should p:ss off back to NZ. Barnes called it grit. I just wish the referee had picked up an awful lot more.

@sirtidychris

To be fair they've only both play consistently well this season, last season there form was patchy to say the least.

If they continue to play like that are at the minute then they'll be in the EPS in no time.

I dont know what billy and freddie need to do to get picked for england...they showed flood and allen how its done today, they are of the age now where we need them in not wait another 2 years and massively limit thier development. So frustrating!

Burns has been showing it all season. Really don't get it. Lancaster last season would have definitely chosen him. This year he seems to be like your traditional English coach.

I feel so sorry for JSD, he has been the most consistent wing in the Premiership over that last 10 years, had a great start to his international career and then simply fell out of contention for reasons unknown, I fear time is not on his side now but he would have been awsome for England over the years.

Burns was very impressive, not perfect, but very impressive. One try and a beautiful set up, really put down a marker and I hope SL was watching because he outplayed Flood by a mile.

Twelvetrees once again, who's daughter has he slept with, played much better than Allen yesterday and is 10 times the player Turner-Hall is. GET HIM IN THE EPS ASAP

Very concerned about T.Youngs being England's potential second choice #2, his throwing was dismal and frankly unexceptable at this level. I thought under Cockers guidance he would be much bettter.
