Bath chief executive Nick Blofeld believes a series of tougher contract negotiations will serve the club well moving forward.

Having expanded their squad up to 40 players thanks to a series of new arrivals in the middle of last season and during the off-season break, Bath are currently benefiting from their greater depth as they sit fourth in the Aviva Premiership after the opening four rounds.

New recruits in the past year have included Peter Stringer, Mat Gilbert, Eusabio Guinazu and Semesa Rokoduguni, whilst the likes of Francois Louw, Dave Attwood and Carl Fearns have all signed new contracts.

"Our squad is a bit bigger and we've been a bit smarter and probably tougher in salary negotiations, and we've been able to increase the squad by I think three or four people," Blofeld told The Bath Chronicle.

"That's very important. If you look at the successful teams over the last few years, Leicester in particular, they've all had that strength in depth.

"We are getting towards that depth so that when you have one or two injuries you are not severely exposed. And you need that in the attritional Premiership."

"When I first came I don't think we were actually spending up to the cap whereas we are pushing right up against it now and we've negotiated some tough improved contracts.

"Some people have taken a salary cut to stay at the club, which I think is another very strong sign of the culture and attitude and also the ambition of the club.

"The players recognise that - both new players coming in and the people already here, who want to stay."
