Wilson replaces Stevens in EPS

25th September 2012 16:09

Dave Wilson Bath

Promoted: Dave Wilson

England have called in Bath tighthead prop David Wilson to their Elite Player Squad for the November clashes with Fiji, Australia, the Boks and All Blacks.

The front-row, who won the last of his 19 caps against Romania in RWC 2011, replaces Matt Stevens, who recently retired from internationals.

Wilson's place in the Saxons squad has been given to Saracens prop Mako Vunipola, but Stuart Lancaster has not yet replaced Ben Foden.

"The three sides we are playing from the Rugby Championship all play very differently," Lancaster said when asked about the upcoming games.

"We are going to have to have a different gameplan to suit each side we play and adapt from game to game.

"New Zealand are the form side but they have been pushed, not only in the summer by Ireland, but also Argentina and South Africa in the last Test.

"There are some great challenges coming around the corner and it is great to benchmark ourselves."

@APV 1 - sorry but can't agree with your there! Marler is good and getting better and does give a lot around the park - but a prop needs to do his core job first and Cole, Hartley and Corbs are our best scrummaging front row and to be fair to them all decent around the park too!

I think Wilson probably deserves the call up - just!

This should be the best front row in the world by 2015 - they more than held their own in SA and if we can get a couple of committed second rowers behind them (which I think is also developing) we can show what a weapon the scrum can still be in international rugby.

Exciting times for an old prop like me!

@ NH Saints - I think Marler has his scrummaging nailed right now. The SA tour and training with Wig sorted him out. It's a good position for England to be in, having competition of this caliber in the front row!!!!

You'd think Nick Wood would be up there somewhere competeing for a spot at 1 but I suppose with Marler and Corbisiero (probably our best loosehead atm) he's not close. Our best frontrow is unquestionably Corbs, Hartley, Cole at the minute and probably heading into 2015 too...unless Marler can get his scrummaging sorted...

Good on him.

It's still Cole and Marler as first choice, imo.

A not unexpected delvelopment D.Wilson has been involved with the EPS for a few years now,and is still young enough to learn and improve.Theres also a raft of good props comming though ,hard on his and other EPS players heels ,like N.Catt,Harden ect, interesting times ahead comming upto 205 and 19 imo.
