Worcester: See off Bath

Worcester gave their survival hopes a massive boost with a commanding 16-7 victory over Bath at Sixways on Friday.

The win takes the Warriors nine points clear of the bottom of the Aviva Premiership table.

Lewis Moody's terrible week got even worse after the former England captain suffered a head injury in Bath's defeat.

Moody, who was the subject of criticism in the leaked report into England's World Cup failure earlier in the week, had already sustained a cut to his head when a collision with Worcester wing Marcel Garvey forced him from the field.

On what was a bad night for Bath in every respect, second row Dave Attwood was stretchered off the field 15 minutes from time after receiving lengthy treatment for a neck injury.

Bath's problems started from the first line-out when fourth-choice hooker Mark Lilley, who normally plays at prop, missed his jumper and went on to have an evening to forget.

Lilley went on to miss four further throws and was eventually replaced ten minutes from time by rookie Will Tanner, who had been recalled as cover from a loan spell at National Two Clifton.

The result was ultimately decided by a superb try from Warriors wing Miles Benjamin. Joey Carlisle's well-timed pass found Benjamin on his shoulder and the England Saxon speedster left several defenders trailing in his wake on his way to the line.

Carlisle converted to add to his earlier penalty and the Warriors led 10-0 at half-time.

Carlisle made that 13-0 with a 55th-minute penalty before Bath finally found their stride with a passage of play that extended to 24 phases.

Worcester, though, held their discipline and their defensive line, to repel Bath who were in danger of going scoreless in the league for the first time in nearly two years until Charlie Beech was driven over from a line-out move.

Barkley converted to set up the prospect of a tense finale, however Bath lost possession inside their own 22 with five minutes to go and were duly punished when and Andy Goode landed a game-clinching drop goal.
