Joel Everson Canterbury v Auckland ITM Cup 2014

Try-time: Joel Everson scores the opening try

Canterbury got their ITM Cup campaign off to a superb start with a deserved 48-9 victory over Auckland in Christchurch on Saturday.

The hosts, who are aiming to win the tournament for the seventh time in a row, had too much ammunition for their visitors and scored six unanswered tries.

Canterbury were dominant from start to finish and scored their first try in the ninth minute when Joel Everson crashed over after Johnny McNicholl laid the groundwork in the build-up.

Tom Taylor added the extras - He finished the game with a 16-point haul via five conversions and two penalties - and the hosts added two further tries, in the first half, via Adam Whitelock and McNicholl.

Auckland's only response on the scoreboard during this period were two Gareth Anscombe penalties and Canterbury were cruising at half-time with a 27-6 lead.

Canterbury upped the ante after the break while Auckland battle to keep up. The homeside scored three further tries - via McNicholl, Matt Todd and Patrick Osborne - while another penalty from Anscombe was all Auckland could add to their points tally.
