Munster see off Treviso challenge

Rob Penney's Munster regained second spot in the PRO12 with a comfortable 14-3 win over Treviso at Thomond Park on Saturday.

In a scrappy first half, Mat Berquist's penalty gave Benetton an early 3-0 advantage but Keith Earls' try late in the period took the Irish province 7-3 ahead at the break.

James Downey touched down in the second period to seal the victory for the home side and give them their 14th Pro12 success of the campaign.

By contrast, the defeat leaves Treviso down in 11th position in the table with just three wins all season.

Even without their Ireland stars, who were rested following their Six Nations excursions, Rob Penney's men were expected to comfortably dispatch the Italian outfit.

However, they were met with stern resistance and it was the visitors that opened the scoring through a Berquist three-pointer.

Although the hosts proceeded to control much of the next half-an-hour, missed penalties from JJ Hanrahan prevented them from getting on the board.

Treviso's fly-half was then awry from the tee before Munster finally registered a score after 37 minutes when Earls scampered over.

The Irish team started the second period on the front foot and the pressure exerted on the Benetton forward pack resulted in a yellow card for Giovanni Maistri.

Penney's side took advantage of their opposition being down to 14-men when the ball was spread wide to Downey who touched down.

Munster then went in search of two further tries to secure the bonus-point but their own lack of composure and Treviso's battling qualities saw them frustrated.
