Northampton s George North celebrates scoring

Try for Saints: George North

Northampton Saints outscored Sale Sharks five tries to two to win 33-14 in Friday's Premiership clash at Franklin's Gardens.

Three unanswered tries in the first half laid the platform as Saints disposed of Sharks to move second in the table.

Northampton were looking to bounce back from a narrow reverse away at Gloucester, while Sale were looking to make it back to back wins following their triumph over Wasps.

An even start to the game was interrupted on 14 minutes by the game's first try, scored by Luther Burrell, who sailed over the line following an ambitious attacking move from the hosts.

Stephen Myler added the conversion and the Saints went further ahead on 23 minutes when George North crossed for his first try in Northampton colours out wide.

Myler missed this time, but he was back on target following George Pisi's try just after the half hour as the Saints continued to dominate proceedings.

At 19-0, Sale knew they needed to find the next points of the game to stay in the contest, and they gave themselves hope on the stroke of half-time when Mark Cueto crossed for Danny Cipriani to convert.

14 minutes into the second half Lee Dickson made it even tougher for Sale when he strode over for Saints, and just after the hour the contest was as good as over courtesy of a deserved try from Phil Dowson.

Myler's fourth successful conversion of the evening made it 33-7 and, with the bonus point already in the bag, Saints appeared content to sit on their lead.

The Sharks crossed for a deserved consolation in the dying minutes through Mark Jones, though it did little to dent the atmosphere at Franklin Gardens, as Northampton bounced back from last week's setback.
