Louis Picamoles France Ireland

Saved France: Louis Picamoles

A try from powerful France number eight Louis Picamoles salvaged a 13-13 result against Ireland as they left the Aviva Stadium with a point.

The Toulouse man's try six minutes from time, converted by Frederic Michalak, ensured the French ended their run of three straight defeats.

It had looked like Ireland would hold on to pick up a priceless Six Nations win but a series of injury concerns over Brian O'Driscoll and Luke Marshall left the hosts scrambling for fit players before Picamoles crashed over in the 73rd minute.

It was the second successive draw between the two sides but extended France's winless streak over the past two Six Nations to seven, their worst run since 1926-27, and leaves them needing to beat Scotland at home next Saturday to have any chance of avoiding the wooden spoon.

The Irish made the early running in terrible weather conditions and were rewarded after a superb tactical kick deep into the French 22 by O'Driscoll set up a lineout.

Peter O'Mahony won the ball and from the resulting driving maul Heaslip squeezed over the line to score his eighth international try - Jackson belied concerns over his place-kicking, after a disastrous performance against Scotland, by landing a superb conversion.

France were presented with a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 16th minute but Michalak, whose selection had raised eyebrows after three poor performances, missed his penalty from close range.

Ireland were very much in control but Jackson missed a chance to make it 10-0 in the 23rd minute as his penalty from long range drifted wide.

Michalak made no mistake with his second chance in the 27th minute as he slotted over a penalty to make it 7-3.

However, the Irish scrum were forcing the French into infringement after infringement and Jackson, assuming responsibility when the Irish could have kicked for the corner, opted for a kick at goal from long range in the 30th minute and converted it to restore the seven point advantage.

The 21-year-old, playing in only his second test, was showing little fear and he punished the French again three minutes later as he stroked a penalty over from about 45 metres for 13-3 which even had injured first choice fly-half Jonathan Sexton grinning and applauding from the stands.

Michalak's woeful first-half finished on a suitably low note as given the chance to give France a filip on the stroke of half-time he sent another kickable penalty wide to leave the Irish sitting comfortably enough at the break.

Jackson had an early chance in the second-half to extend the lead but his effort fell just short.

The Irish were still controlling the game but prop Mike Ross conceded a penalty in the 54th minute and Morgan Parra stepped up, replacing the misfiring Michalak, and converted it for 13-6.

Parra, though, proved he too was fallible, missing a tough penalty attempt just before the hour mark as the French started to pressure the hosts into a series of errors.

The visitors pressed forward desperate to redress the balance but saw a chance go begging as with extra men wide out to the right they failed to push home the advantage and the Irish defence held firm.

However, eventually the French breached the line as Picamoles took advantage of Ireland dithering after a penalty was awarded and tapping it quickly he touched it down for his fifth try for his country - Michalak stepped up to the task and converted for 13-13.

Why do ireland only play for 40 minutes. They did it agaisnt wales england anf know france. I do like england but i dont pitty them because they are their own worse enemies.

And france where not event that good, if ireland want to go further at international level then they need to buck up their ideas. The french flair is gone but it doesn't make sense cause they have great players. They both deserve to be at the bottom at the moment.

Turnip Face should be shot after that second half performance. Almost total dominance for 50 minutes, with a lacklustre French team and Michalak utterly rubbish, yet they managed to somehow throw victory away. Let's hope Italy win next week and finally send this shiny-bapped plonker on his way.

Silver linings in a grey cabbage-shaped cloud: strong showings from Heaslip, O'Brien, Healy and a huge improvement from Jackson. O'Driscoll was brilliant as always, doing the important unseen work when he needed too...sad that his hometown send-off should be on an occasion so ignominious. Murray wasn't pants, for a change (and he was taken off with 20 to go. Great decision there).

Another dour match.

Difficult conditions. France were lucky to escape virtually unscathed.

France should thank Kidney for taking off Murray off. He was better than ever. If he had stayed on the field maybe Ireland would have got away with the victory.

Sean O'Brien is fantastic.

Horrible conditions to play rugby. But Ireland adapted better to them.

I was glad to see that PSA didn't substitute players indiscriminately. Nyanga should have stayed, though. He's a great player.

No creativity from France. Huget is solid. Clerc and Medard were anonymous (it was impossible to play rugby).

Michalak kicked away too much possession but he tried to mix kicking and passing. The conditions were so difficult that keeping ball in hand was not the best choice; he tried to be creative. France were on the back foot most of the time when I thought that their physicality would win the game for them. Michalak struggles in that situation, the same as any other 10 in the world. He was not guilty of not having won the match. His place kicking might not have been good but the conditions were terrible for all the kickers.

Well done O'Mahony and Ryan. You stood your ground. The Irish front five were able to secure possession in the rucks and mauls.

Why did Domingo get substituted? What does Debaty bring onto the team?

I hope Reddan's injury is not serious. It's sad to see a player go off the field on a stretcher in a buggy.

Maestri seems to have a separated shoulder. He can have some rest at last. His odometer must be tired after clocking so many miles, it's been a long season for him... Sorry for Toulouse.

Did Parra have a good game? I am afraid he is a bit overrated...

Tough last weekend for France and Ireland... Tougher for France, though.

Most probably the ugliest game of the 6N this year. Both teams were poor and without any inspiration at all. Picamoles was in my opinion the best player on the field, but man of the match has to go to O'Driscoll for his very-likely final game at home. It is a shame as he deserves more than a draw.

Red card to the BBC commentator: "France might feel like everyone hates them, and rightly so." Biased and borderline xenophobic comment in my opinion.

What are the odds eh! Jackson was solid today and got those impressive kicks over, well done!

Murray shouldn't come off, what the hell was Reddan doing 5m away from try line?!?! Seemed like he wanted to win the game himself.

I can not stand certain members on PR calling for substitutions based on their province and all the name bashing who crosses the line, today's game made previous comments and posters on other threads look like idiots.

Green is the colour by the way...

Well a game of tension, with some good playi nbetween.Ireland as usual came out firing, and built a lead. Then again in the 2nd half faded, and didnt trouble the scoreboard again.France where below what they where when they played England.Though conditions might have had a say in that.Mitchlak is a hard dry pitch player,he doesnt play his best in the wet cold conditions we get i the NH.Will a draw be enough to save either coach??Doughtfull, and i also think Mitchlak wont be playing for France anymore after this 6Ns ,and some other french players will be lucky to survie imo.As for Ireland that most probily was BODs swansong in Ireland,he gave a 100% but the team overall didnt shine, and i dont feel he will now be ending his career as a Lion,in Australia.Which is a shame
