Billy Twelvetrees try celebration England v Scotland

Debut try: Billy Twelvetrees

A strong performance from England saw them defeat Scotland 38-18 at Twickenham to retain the Calcutta Cup.

The hosts enjoyed large portions of possession in both halves and arguably should have come away with more points, despite racking up four tries through Chris Ashton, debutant Billy Twelvetrees, Geoff Parling and Danny Care.

Scotland were not without their moments - a brilliant break from full-back Stuart Hogg leading to the first try of the afternoon for the visitors - but they were forced into defence too often and conceded needless penalties at the breakdown when momentum was behind them.

Owen Farrell produced one of his best displays yet in international rugby, a long pass securing England's third try, whilst Twelvetrees lived up to the billing he has been given in recent weeks in the build-up to the beginning of the Six Nations.

The victory means that England will travel to Dublin with confidence, but also aware that there is plenty to work on if they are to finish this year's championship with a title.

A burst from Ben Morgan set England on their way early on, winning the penalty phases later which Farrell converted for a 3-0 lead after two minutes.

England controlled the opening phases, going close with attacks from Wood and then Ashton with little errors causing them to lose possession - but it was a stunning break from Hogg that brought Scotland into the game as he scorched though frozen English tacklers and ended up close to the line.

Scotland controlled possession metres out before Greig Laidlaw drew the tackle of Geoff Parling to put Sean Maitland in the corner to score on debut.

Farrell responded with a penalty to give England a 6-5 lead. A loose pass from Richie Gray then put Scotland under intense pressure on their own 22, England winning the penalty at the breakdown for Farrell to add another three points.

England were immediately penalised from the restart for entering the side of a ruck, handing Laidlaw a penalty chance on the edge of the 22 which he duly converted to narrow the gap to a single point at 9-8.

The hosts struggled to convert several chances in the red zone before a chargedown off the back of Farrell created another opening - Twelvetrees gliding through a gap before Chris Ashton squeezed under two tacklers to score England's first try.

Neither side was able to establish a foothold in the opposition's half during the closing stages of the opening 40 minutes, until a high tackle on Morgan led to another penalty for Farrell to send through the posts.

Johnnie Beattie responded with a powerful run for the Scots which ended in a penalty nearly 30 metres out, Laidlaw converting to leave the score at 19-11 at the interval.

England started the second half with a bang - Billy Twelvetrees eventually crashing over for a try on debut after a great pass from Ben Youngs.

Farrell continued to turn up the pressure in an assured performance, pinning Scotland back into their half. Any momentum generated by the Scots a few minutes later was then killed off for a simple penalty, putting England back on the attack.

The hosts fluidity and power eventually proved too much for Scotland to handle, with Joe Launchbury appearing to cross over for a third try before the play was called back for a high tackle.

A burst from Ben Youngs however threw England back into Scottish territory, Farrell spinning a brilliant wide pass to Geoff Parling to go over in the corner for England's third try.

Scotland's defence continued to struggle throughout the second half, but a turnover near their own life breathed life into their attack, Alex Goode was wrapped up by four blue shirts to concede a penalty in his own half with Jackson kicking to the corner.

Their efforts though were in vain as replacement David Denton knocked on heading for the try line. The resulting scrum did not go England's way and Scotland had another chance, but their efforts once again were undone at the breakdown.

England continued to show the greater invention in attack but a breakaway score from Hogg gave Scotland hope - Maitland's kick gathered by the rapid Hogg who scored in the corner with Laidlaw converting.

An error from Mike Brown then saw him penalised for holding on inside England's 22, handing Scotland an opportunity with a five metre lineout which they failed to make the most of.

England switched the momentum back their way and finished things off with a fourth try in the 80th minute, replacement Danny Care sniping around the fringes to leave the final score at 38-18.

Man of the match: Excellent handling, pace and kicking from Billy Twelvetrees on debut saw him cap it off with a try on debut.

Moment of the match: After being disallowed a third try, Ben Youngs had Scotland scampering and ultimately led to the score from Geoff Parling, putting the game out of reach.

Villain of the match: Scotland's 19 missed tackles meant that today was always going to be a struggle.

@Dafydd - let me know when Wales start playing anything approaching rugby - Prat.

I think melkdave is one of the better posters on this site.

Parking should be certainty for lions test starter, without a doubt, along with cole.

I hope Manu returns outside 36. Very with pressed with Billy's running and distribution today.

@ Heart of oak - I don't know what your obsession is with varndell. I agree street toe shouldn't be near the squad, but neither should can't catch, can't tackle varndell. Young's should definitely keep his place too. A lot of the positive stuff came from him in the first half.

England were NOT strong. They were efficient and disciplined. Scotland made the usual mistakes and did not take their chances. Alain Rolland, and I am a big fan, made for a poor game by ruining the scrum and made a few other silly decisions (none of which would have altered the result but spoiled the game). Boring.

Changes are needed - can't wait to see Burns at 10, although Farell did well.

Manu back in ASAP, Goode out and either Foden in or switch Brown - I'd like to see Vunipola start.

Twelvetrees can be the find of the tournament. At last a gifted English centre with the necessary handling skills (he reminds me of Guscott in the way he can read the game and find the gap before receiving the ball and move forward) and not the bashing ram-style of recent years.

Well done England on the whole. Good defence and great ambition to play the ball in style.

Scotland always lose in the close contact area. What's up with their players? Lack of beef? In every tackle the Scots lost ground. England can be one of the most physical teams in the world right now but Scotland were demolished up front when their players on paper are not that inferior to the English, so they had to do with a dearth of possession. Matt Scott looks like a fine prospect but Lamont still seems useless to me as a centre. But at least he's better than De Luca. Ansbro a few years ago seemed good. Alongside Scott he would make an interesting partnership. Evans should come on for Lamont, imho. Hogg and Laidlaw cannot shine if their forwards don't secure possession and the centres are on the back foot.

Right now the only Scot to make the Lions squad is Richie Gray. Beattie only plays well with the ball in hand and with space and in flashes. I would expect more presence in the game from a number 8. Strokosch was sorely missed. He would have matched the physicality of the England backrow better than Denton did (he's good when he's got room to run but in the close encounters he cannot hold his ground). In the tackle area Scotland are still poor. As another contributor pointed out, instead of trying to move the ball around Scotland like to play in close quarters. But it's only the first match of the tournament. Let's hope the level of performance improves. Their commitment is always indubitable. They have to match it with their skills.

Watched the match. Was a boring match compared to Wales v Ireland. The real test for Eng will be next week. Scotland are the weakest team in the 6 nations imo. If the Irish can get parity in the scrum and forward play then I can see their better back line winning the match. Looking forward to watching match at Aviva.

Good in bits, parking brown (minus the scot try) and youngs all should have been MOM ahead of Farrell.

The key fault in England's play was forcing the offload. There were probably 10+ occasions where they tried to force the offload when taking the tackle would have been good enough. Also if you try to offload once fine, twice is getting risky, but 3 times in one phase you will run out of support and get turned over

I don't want to knock the enterprise, but a bit more nouse will see this team go far

As a footnote, my contempt for Chris Ashton went up a notch. What a d!(k

Scotland's back three are lethal... an utter waste having an out centre who can't pass. Drop Lamont from the Squad and either shift Hogg to the midfeild or draft in Grove or Dunbar. Scott didn't show much and Jackson was dissapointing... yet again kicking away the ball on the attack in the opposition's half. Beatie was out standing and Laidlaw controlled the game well. Need the aforementioned changes, then things might start to go our way.

Eng squandered a load of chances in the Scots 22. It was an excellent performance and there is huge room for improvement. What was missing was MT coming back in, on an angle to break the straight line defence in the 22. Mikey Brown didn't come off his wing so was left with the dregs thrown out at the end of the line. There may be better players. Corbs was missed but the scrum was solid. The lack of experience in the 2nd row was evident and they will get better. As I said earlier it was good performance with loads of room for improvement.

Great game, so relieved with the performance 'and' the result. Comments on the players:

-Marler had a great game and really made up for his last performance.

-Apart from a few stray lineouts I thought Youngs was solid. Did anyone see what he did to get our try disallowed?

-Cole was solid at scrum time and his usual nuisance at the breakdown.

-Launchbury keeps getting better and better and has one foot on the plane to Australia this summer. Parling was solid too.

-I was really impressed with Lawes's impact when he came on, he's hitting some real form lately. I still want to see the Lawes+Launchbury combo at some point.

-Wood and Robshaw are such workaholics. The moment that epitomised them was when I saw Wood literally jumping to his feet immediately after making a tackle at the 75 minute mark to make another tackle, only spending about a second on the floor. Now that is stamina and commitment!

-Morgan was deadly carrying the ball, I hope his injury wasn't serious. Haskell did some decent work on the floor when he came on but lacks that ability to beat the first tackler.

-Youngs really impressed me. Less crabbing and more passing, exactly what we wanted from him! Care was good when he came on too.

-Farrell showed real maturity today, some great passes and such consistent kicking. He seemed to really thrive with a distributor at 12.

-Brown was his usual feisty self, such a fun player to watch.

-Twelvetrees had an amazing debut. The line he ran to get his try was deceptively brilliant.

-I was disappointed with Barritt in attack but he was still world class in defence.

-Ashton impressed me with his clinical finishing and solid tackling.

-Goode disappointed me. He was passing too early, missed some tackles, and counter attacked when he shouldn't have.

-Strettle was poor, shouldn't have been in the team. Flood was innocuous when he came on too.

@heart_of_oak You say that Billy Twelvetrees should move to IC, that is n 12 - correct? Well, if you look at the team that played today you will notice he played no 12 and Brad Barrit played at 13 (OC).

@Daffydd29 - crawl back into your little pondokie (house) and go back to sleep, you obviously do not watch the game of Rugby Union.

melkdave - keep posting my friend. You are prolific but that'because you love the game and are sporting. And hey PR - Hogg's try was a length-of-the-field effort from Scotland. Who were well down. At Twickenham. Showed ambition. If France had done that you wouldn't call it a "breakaway score". Anyway, no complaints. I find it refreshing and scary that Lancaster will take a chance on guys like Twelvetrees.
