Munster battle past Connacht

22nd December 2012 19:05

Ian Keatley

Narrow margins: Ian Keatley

A first half penalty try proved to be the difference as Munster defeated Connacht 16-12 in tough conditions in Galway.

Munster crucially struck for 10 unanswered points late in the first half while Connacht hooker Jason Harris-Wright was in the sin-bin.

Ian Keatley converted a penalty try and added his second penalty, handing Rob Penney's men a 13-6 interval lead with Dan Parks booting a brace of penalties for Connacht.

A third penalty and a drop goal from Parks set up a grandstand finish during which George Naoupu was inches away from grabbing the match-winning try.

The big Connacht lock slid onto a grubber kick in the right corner but failed to get the necessary downward pressure according to television match official Marshall Kilgore.

It was a heartbreaking result for the westerners, who had lost by the exact same four point margin on both of Munster's last two visits to Galway.

Connacht brought the wind and rain home with them from Biarritz last week, and were boosted by the return of stand-in captain Nathan White and Naoupu to their pack.

Munster made 10 changes to the side that went down to Saracens last Sunday, with centres Casey Laulala and James Downey among the five survivors.

The visitors got off to a robust start, carrying strongly in midfield with recent Ireland cap David Kilcoyne very much involved.

Connacht threatened with a deft dink from Parks that David McSharry gobbled up, but the young centre lost the ball in contact.

Parks opened the scoring in the 11th minute, his wobbly penalty from the left going through the posts after Donncha O'Callaghan was penalised for a ruck offence.

It brought about a strong response from the men in red, hooker Mike Sherry going close at the end of a lineout maul and the attack led to Keatley's levelling penalty.

A cleaner strike from Parks edged Connacht back in front, punishing Tommy O'Donnell for not rolling away.

The former Scotland international was growing in influence, but his opposite number Keatley pulled off a terrific try-saving tackle on Fetu'u Vainikolo as the Tongan winger raced towards the left corner.

The momentum shifted to Munster just before the break as repeated ruck infringements saw Connacht lose Harris-Wright to the sin-bin.

Continuing the recent spate of quickly awarded penalty tries, the resulting close-in scrum saw the seven man Connacht pack lose ground and referee Dudley Phillips signalled for a penalty try.

Keatley converted the 37th minute effort and rewarded a second ground-gaining scrum from Munster near halfway by landing a crisply struck late penalty.

The run of penalties against was beginning to hurt the westerners, with Keatley nudging over his fourth successful kick on the resumption.

Eoin McKeon won a lineout to set up the Connacht forwards for a series of pick and goes and Parks popped over a close range penalty for a 16-9 scoreline.

A drop goal from 25 metre range from Parks put just four points between the sides, the opportunity coming after young number 8 McKeon ran hard from turnover ball.

With Mike McCarthy and replacement Michael Swift having more of an impact, Connacht's tails were suddenly up and Munster centre Downey soon saw yellow for a high tackle on McCarthy.

Parks missed the resulting penalty though and the covering Peter Stringer did just enough to put Naoupu off as the pair dived for that bouncing ball nine minutes from time.

Munster held their ground and their late control of possession wound down the clock for another hard-fought inter-provincial victory.

@BiggyFint

Agreed their squad is playing far above their rating but not ability, they are a solid outfit, I can't help think Parks should have taken one of the pens with 10 mins to go rather than going for the corner but in fairness if the ball had of been grounded it would be a diff story, Still would love to hear why the ref stopped the rolling maul it was a crazy decision

@Melkdave sick in more ways then one. Connacht played all the rugby. The referee was poor imo. Still very proud of the team. Munster are put up on a pedestal by the IRFU and yet I'd like to see any other province consistently field a backline with the age profile that Connacht put out week in week out. Great to be back in the sportsground. Its a special place when the clan are in full voice.

@Damo

You dont have to tell me bro,i really thought Connacht had them,as i said one that got away imo.Bet @BiggyFint is as sick as a parrot today .Even with the ref seemingly being a tad soft on Munster Connacht should have won.,but then Connacht have never been one of the chosen of the IRFU annother reason i dont paticually like them .Just imagine how good they could be with equal funding ect.

me again, this game eh, the rolling maul in the first half rolling along nicely in the Munster 22 and the ref gave a scrum defence was that the worst call of all??????

Connaught in control moving forward nicely with Munster players helpless to stop it and the ref says scrum defence?????

This would have been 3 5 or 7 points for Connaught depending on how it ended up, and possibly a penalty try as Munster couldn't stop it, Dudley Phillips I will be checking what your next game officiating is and I will be avoiding it!!!!!!!!

CLOWN

Hey, sin bin was harsh as player was on his feet, the pen try in the next motion shocking, when Con were down to 14 munster got a pen try and 3 pens, at tge start of the second half Munster gave away countless pens in the ruck but it took a high tackle for Downey to get yellow. I think the ref got a lot of decisions wrong. Keatkeyz knock on in his 22 which hurley played from offside. Parks had 4 kickable pens but passed them off. Why did Nyupu celebrate instead of grounding the ball?????

Yet again a potentially good game is ruined by a poor referee whose grasp of the rules is tenuous, whose application of what little he does know is dreadfully inconsistent, and who seems to think (or so he acts) that he's the star of the show. While both teams were quite obviously getting fed up with the woeful refereeing (at one point he stopped play to berate both teams for berating him) his decisions favoured the more high-profile Munster. (As so often lately the lower profile team is refereed against.) The eventual outcome was a travesty and, in the opinion of this neutral observer, very unfair to Connacht.

The standard of refereeing is, increasingly, a disgrace and the IRB need, urgently, to get it sorted. The current declining standard of refereeing is unfair to the players and to their supporters and to rugby fans. WAKE UP IRB.

Well got back from Xmas shopping, for those final bits ,you must have so everyone says.Sorry that id missed a Saturday of rugby action.,but wait whats online HOORAY Connacht -Munster What a good match it turned out to be ,the connacht sin binning looking like it would be the decive moment ,when Munster get one.The game explodes back into life ,as Connacht throw the kitchin sink ect at getting a victory. Then HOORAY Connacht score what looks like a certain try. Then its refered to the TMO ,and after a ageless wait its disaloud.Just how did he not ground the ball is beyond me ,and once again Munster escape with what can only be considerd a lucky victory.Just devestated as i really like Connacht ,and still cant belive that want a try.One that definatly got away imo .
