Tom Taylor: Broke the record for most points scored in a final

Canterbury won a record fifth ITM Cup title on the trot after beating Auckland 31-18 in Christchurch on Saturday.

Auckland dominated proceedings in the first half but were strangled out of the match in the second forty as Canterbury played for territory and took the points when the opportunities presented themselves.

The visitors left nothing to chance and worked themselves to a stand still as they threw everything they had at their opponents, but they just couldn't crack the Canterbury defence.

It was Canterbury full-back Tom Taylor who proved to be the Achilles heel for Auckland, scoring two tries and slotting three penalties and two conversions for a personal haul of 23 points to break the record for most points scored in a final.

The visitors got off to a dream start to silence the parochial Canterbury crowd with a try to centreHadleigh Parkes after just two minutes.

Dave Thomas did a splendid job at claiming Auckland's kick-off, and following a break by livewire full-back Charles Piutau, the ball was recycled as wing Ben Lam flicked out a pass for Parkes who hit the line at pace to go in under the posts.

Auckland looked incredibly threatening with the ball in hand as Lam and Piutau both made inroads through the Canterbury defence, but two misdirected kicks that went out on the full and dead in goal gave the ball back to the opposition in prime attacking real estate.

A quick tap from a Canterbury scrum inside Auckland's half saw the ball spun wide as bruising midfielder Robbie Fruean got on the outside of Lam and passed inside to Taylor who went over for the try.

Two penalty kicks to Gareth Anscombe gave Auckland a 13-7 lead at the half hour mark before Taylor struck back with a penalty kick of his own.

Auckland should then have scored a fine try with a massive overlap but a cynical knock down by Telusa Veainu denied the visitors a five-pointer as the Canterbury winger earned himself 10 minutes in the sin bin for his trouble.

However Auckland were unable to turn the one man advantage into points, and instead it was the hosts who struck a killer blow on the stroke of half-time.

From a stolen line-out, the ball was spun wide to Ryan Crotty who brushed off a tackle and passed to Taylor who scored for his second try of the night to give Canterbury a slender 15-13 lead at the break.

Canterbury looked to exert their dominance in the second half with two further penalty kicks to Taylor and a drop goal to Tyler Bleyendaal.

Auckland's first championship since 2007 was slowly slipping from their grasp and as they were forced to play catch-up rugby, it backfired badly.

Piutau tried to spark his side into action with a run inside his own 22, but he was caught by the swarming red and black defence, and as the ball was turned over and spun wide, Fruean stepped inside his man and passed to Veainu who went over in the corner.

Lolagi Visinia managed to score a consolation try on full-time, but it was too little too late as Canterbury celebrated their fifth championship victory in a row.

A lifetime Canterbury supporter, I'm rapt that we just won our 5th consecutive title to set a new record. Can't say I saw anything wrong with Glen Jackson's refereeing, but I guess I'm not from Auckland. A word of praise for the arch-enemy, though --- they started the game extremely well, and their skill-levels in the first half were very, very good ---they thoroughly deserved their half-time lead.

Captain George seems to come from the same mould as Chiefs' skipper Craig Clarke ; no nonsense, whole-hearted effort, never-say die attitude. Proved in the semi by scoring a try in extra-time when many around him were wilting. Proved again in the final by snaffling the lineout ball that led directly to the match-sealing Canterbury try --- onya George, hope you get a black jersey soon. Brother Luke finally showed me why he's a surprise AB by helping destroy the Auckland lineout. Dom Bird over 2m tall and 139kg a great breakout season, made Ali look very ordinary ---- sorry Ali, we love you but time to head forJapan.

Tom Taylor you beauty, no need to worry about DC getting a bit long in the tooth when the red and black factory continues to produce such quality. Tabai Matson a very cluey coach too, destined for higher honours even than being Canterbury coach!

Interesting article in NZ Herald re Glen Jackson's crucial game changing decisions which I thought at the time were strange and strongly favoured Canterbury. Glen has a future no doubt but he looked like Ref Barnes in 2007, too inexperienced.

Ramage - there is plenty of politics in the refs appointments - too much sadly.

Kiwieire02 - the main qualification to coach in Canterbury is to be a former Canterbury player. Not sure its working @ S15

Congrats Canterbury! But it makes me wonder why the crusaders haven't won a Super Rugby title since 08 when Canterbury has been so dominant during the same time span. I know Super Rugby and ITM Cup are at 2 different levels but..... I think Crusaders might be regretting Rob Penney moving to Munster, Oh well I heard that Joe Schimdt might be looking had heading back to NZ, He has a handy coaching record now doesn't he?!

The review the referees have at the conclusion of this game should bring up some interesting points. Wouldnt mind being a fly on the wall listening to and watching the clips of points that need to be raised for referee improvement. Could be quite a long session. I understand Jackson has been fast tracked as a former professional player into the referee ranks. Hmmm dont get me wrong e has done well but itl seems after this performance he may need to go and getsome further training. Will be interesting to see the English comments after they play Fiji. Wonder if being from the Bay of Plenty has any bearing on the matter? Others from the Bay who have had major problems exposed have been Bryce Lawrence, his father Keith, both meeting their downfall at respective RWCs and a referee obviously being pushed by Rod Hill and who could turn up in Super Rugby Nick Briant. All of these are or becoming well known for their many confusing decisions. Just hope these bay of Plenty referees dont follow in the footsteps of the Lawrences.

Brands no - not loose! and not Akl supporter either, just giving my "neutral" assessment! Although they do remind me of the great Akl sides of the 80's 90's- orchestrated cheating, referee manipulation, player poaching, one eyed crowds. Those Akl sides were more fun to watch though, unless Grant Fox was taking endless shots at goal.

Ferdie - Ali did his best for his first time back but he wouldn't make the team on that performance. Luke Whitelock might get his spot. Crocket was his usual drop arm / fold in best and it astounds me that he still attracts penalties for his team when he is clearly at fault and beaten by his opponent ...and makes the ABs. Akl were dominant at scrum time but got no advantage from Ref Jackson.

yes I only saw the last 20 as well and agree that Jackson got a bit flustered. But I guess he has to learn to deal with that otherwise players will take advantage. Anyway well done Canterbury. Done it again.

only saw last 20min, no comment other than well done Canterbury, by the time I started watching they had the game sewn up. None of the news reviews I've seen mentioned Ali Williams' performance, wondering if he played his way in to or out of the AB's NH tour?

One win for Auckland today though - Auckland won women's national rugby title beating Canterbury 38-12 in Christchurch - this is their 13th national victory in the past 14 years.

Well done Canterbury. Cant say I enjoyed it that much - boorish crowd that seemed to intimidate / fluster Glen Jackson and loads of obstruction etc that we have come to love from the red and blacks. Still they really know how to mold a team.
