All Blacks outclass Argentina

30th September 2012 01:46

Julian Savea try new zealand v Argentina 2012 BA

Two tries: Julian Savea

New Zealand clinched the inaugural Rugby Championship title with a round to spare on Saturday with a 54-15 win over Argentina in La Plata.

The All Blacks produced their best performance of the year to demolish los Pumas, scoring seven tries including a hat-trick for Cory Jane and two for his fellow wing Julian Savea.

Centre Ma'a Nonu and scrum-half Aaron Smith also got their names on the scorecard to complete the rout.

The result sees the All Blacks extend their winning streak to 15 games ahead of next weekend's showdown with the Springboks in Johannesburg.

The world champions were given a scare early on as the hosts started in the best possible fashion by taking a 5-0 lead thanks to a wonderful try from scrum-half Martin Landajo.

But it didn't take long for New Zealand to strike back and once the visitors had found their rhythm, it was one-way traffic for the rest of the game and the men in black raced to a 32-8 lead by half-time.

Argentina were not allowed to get away with their customary spoiling tactics at the breakdown by referee Jaco Peyper, and with quick ball at their disposal, the All Black backs were at their devastating best.

The hosts tried to adopt a much more open style than we've seen in the past but while they produced two very good tries, they were unable to match the Kiwis at what they do best - moving the ball into space at pace.

The locals were looking good after Landajo's opening score from a well-worked first-phase backline move that saw full-back Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino burst through on halfway.

But the Argentine defence was nowhere to be seen when Nonu escaped from the fringe of a ruck to put Smith over in the 17th minute.

A few minutes later Read strolled through to set up Jane in the corner, Savea chased down his own chip ahead for his first try and then bagged another on the stroke of half-time.

Although Gonzalo Camacho shrugged off Andrew Hore to score after the interval, the All Blacks killed the game off as Savea manhandled two defenders to set up Jane's second.

Dan Carter kicked five from seven before being taken off along with Richie McCaw on the hour mark. But it didn't stop the points from flowing as replacement Aaron Cruden broke the line with his first touch and set up Nonu for an easy try.

Jane clinched his hat-trick with a 50m intercept with the last play of the game.

Man of the Match It's hard not to give the gong to one of the backs since they scored all the points. Richie McCaw deserves a mention but Kieran Read was phenomenal and had a direct hand in creating at least two of the tries for the flash boys out wide.

Moment of the match: There were a number of excellent tries - with Landajo's score a highlight - but Cory Jane's first try, thanks to a brilliant offload from Read, was out of the top drawer. It put the All Blacks 10 points up and they never looked back.

Villian of the match: No bad guys to be seen.

euskadi, once again, i'm not saying the ref is biased, the game is rigged, the ABs should have lost, etc etc yawn yawn. i have no interest in that rubbish.

i'm just observing how the ABs slow down Pumas attacks. and don't get warned. for around 7minutes of not having the ball. 4 minutes of which are in the red zone.

from the next kick-off, the pumas are warned almost immediately, after less than 1 minute.

1st ruck is slow since mccaw has carried beyond his clearers. pumas no 2 cld be penalised here

2nd ruck. retallick and c smith ensure v quick ball by tackling players beyond the ruck without the ball

3rd ruck. whitelock is momentarily isolated. 2 pumas decide to contest (legally) but are cleared out creating space for a smith to run.

4th ruck. quick again. mealamu and retallick clear out (off their feet btw, but who's counting?)

5th ruck. quick. pumas don't contest. maybe looks slow because retallick is halfback

6th ruck. mccaw is tackled by roncero. guinazu makes big effort to roll away. placing of ball is disrupted by woodcock and mealamu arriving with characteristic v low body position. he headbutts ball onto pumas side. roncero looks at ref to say he didn't touch the ball. ref admits it is "unintentional".

the 6 rucks have resulted in zero metres gain line advantage. no action in 22, or redzone. no fwd momentum for ABs lost due to slowing tactics. no panic for pumas.

but they get warned?

it's late now. i'm off to do more interesting things. thanks for your patience euskadi.

@euskadi. the sequence from dagg's knock-on to camacho's try is a long period where ABs are working hard without the ball. you would call it great D. but if the same actions were performed by pumas, they would be criticised (by hansen) for deliberately slowing the ball.

49.01 woodcock and nonu in from sides of ruck (this is penalised and advantage is played)

41.09 woodcock again in from side, hore (tackler) not rolling away, retallick not behind last feet

42.25 pumas lineout drive. mccaw in from side, not bound to another AB, works his way to the ball, hore falls on player on the ground to gain time

42.31. a smith shouting at ref for pen for holding on the floor (nice distraction from the real indiscretion)

42.35 v slow ball. hore still trying to knock the ball out of pumas hand (despite having been on the floor for some time). woodcock not behind last feet.

42.37.both franks and woodcock lie beyond ball after tackle. do not attempt to move.

42.38 mccaw's tackle, well timed yes, as you talked about - but doesn't release player or make any attempt to move (yes, i know he's in a tough place to move - but 5m from your goal-line you make an effort to show ref you are at least trying)

42.51 mccaw joins pumas drive from side (without retreating after prior tackle) and again puts himself around the ball. maul held up. turnover!

43.00 roncero politely asks why no pen, and is brushed away.

43.56 quick tap by pumas, franks comically not back 10 and tackles f-lobbe who falls 1m from try line.

44.09 whitelock and hore lean around ruck to stop release of ball, not on their feet

44.20 ref calls them back for not being 10m.

45.00 pumas 5m scrum. woodcock tries to con the ref for a pen - doesn't get it but worth a try!

45.53 after left shoulder, mccaw + read both slip their binds to protect openside

46.13 what is whitelock doing at this ruck? (ref calls advantage)

Pretty amusing this but the game is long over.

Planet rugby must be loving the hits on their website I guess.

Anyway All Blacks v South Africa should be a battle both on the field and on the review forum after!

Carpelone...although the RC for '12 is won I can't wait for next week, somehow I think next weeks match will be the best yet. Boks are IMO our greatest foe, the team I am most worried about regardless of form or the coach or the amount of white/black players in the squad! The Boks are class and when they click only the ABs can live with them (if they also click). I genuinely think that the All Blacks in the pro era are the yardstick for all other teams. The aura and history ensures that the opposition are even more up for the challenge than they normally are (against other teams), the prodigal extra arm and leg are grown and somehow they find something extra to put on the field. The Boks are no different particularly in SA. The aggression increases 20%, the kicks are 10m longer, the tackles 40% harder, the pace 5% quicker the passion doubles it simply means more. But the same is said for NZ, we know what to expect and that for us is the challenge, our yardstick if you wish...the Boks in SA there is no more difficult a challenge.

IMO it was good for NZ that the Boks beat the Wallabies last week, if the Boks had have lost the intensity this week would have been murderous . The Boks with a bit of confidence and certainly a more running mindset (regardless of what JdV says, Goosen ensures this) suits the ABs, thats our game too. Nothing worse than a wounded Bok and nothing worse than a wounded Bok playing the forward bully game plan, they are the only forward pack who can seriously outmuscle and damage the ABs, i'd rather play a running Bok anyday. Anyway I am getting into next week there will be a time and forum for that

@kiwikev. if doing video analysis was so irrelevant, why do you suppose all professional teams do hours of it every week?

As soon as you become affiliated with a professional team then it will become relevant...Slagging a ref doing a job that you could not do in a million lifetimes reflects how pathetic that you really are...

Euskadi.

No problem mate. It was around 2.00 pm when I saw it, I think you are right.

In any case, this was the best performance from New Zealand in a while, really impressive. I criticised Nonu for his performance against Argentina, but I am glad to see him at his best. The Boks have to shift 1 or 2 gear to cope with them, even though they looked improved.

Wish all the Kiwi fans were well balanced and objective like you (there are many though).

lol! You are hilarious! Calm down, you're just embarrassing yourself! So needlessly unpleasant! Your like an old person who's racist. You know that the behaviour is awful, but because they're old and not going to do anything it's kind of funny in a dark way. Are you currently writing from some sort of anger therapist office? If not then maybe you should consider it.

@toulousain - you are not alone. there are some other (albeit quieter) french persons on this site. but i have to hand it to you. i haven't seen a ruck like this in ages!! mostly, the AB counter-ruck wins every time, sending all of us non-NZers crawling back under our rocks, but this thread has turned into a real ding-dong (if that is still a word these days - maybe APV can help?).

hmmm. DING DONG. lovely word that, not used often enough :-)

funny how this is the least relevant point, and the only one that is picked up....

@euskadi. thks. i will have a look at your comments in greater detail if i may.

@carpelone. thks too! a good observation!!

@Toulousian: "my opinion on the rugby matters that you have listed" is that you either need to apply for a top refereeing position, since you are obviously far better at interpreting the rules than idiot refs like Jaco Peyper (your take, not mine), or you need to take your sour French grapes somewhere else.

How your obvious hatred of the All Blacks must be consuming you, to spend what looks like an entire weekend bleating on this site. Get a life already.

@Toulousain: I wasn't making a "rugby point", I was commenting on the childishness and hypocrisy of your posts. You just don't get it. Anyone with a replay available (I haven't got one) and no life to get on with (I've got one) can go through the the game minute by minute and pick up indiscretions by BOTH teams and mistakes by the referee and obsessively write them down. It proves nothing except that all teams and refs commit indiscretions and mistakes, including Argentina who got away with plenty. I know you find that hard to accept but I'll bet my life on it even without reviewing any tape. Take AVP1's advice and try to enjoy your rugby more without looking for conspiracies, corruption, bias (or whatever it is you're looking for) to explain a result you find hard to take. The world's #1 team were in good form and the Pumas couldn't match them, but they had some terrific moments of their own and their future looks great. Move on.

@ Toulousain

If the referee is so bias to the ABs why did he not award an (easy) penalty to the All Blacks when Hernandez threw the ball away @ 52:30?

Probably a case for B.Smith high tackle...

B.Smith (not Carter) and Rettalick do nothing wrong at the ruck, the referee penalises (adv.) McCaw for his entry into the ruck @ 55.50 5m inside the ABs half with Argentina in possession and going forward, correct call so far. @ 56.58 Pumas lose the ball forward on the NZ 22m, Dagg clears to the Arg 22 then Hernandez kicks to touch. I did not hear Peyper call adv. played but would presume that he called advantage over or considered advantage over after Bosch break. Are you seriously saying that Peyper should have dragged the play back for an infringement that occurred more than a minute before? And after the Pumas had made a clear break and gained 23m before losing the ball?

The more evidence you put up for the bias and cheating of the All Blacks the more it seems your understanding of rugby, the rulings, the principle and playing of advantage or rucks situations is very poor. If you are getting these instances from your video analyst then you probably need a new one, analyst that is. But please keep them coming I kind of enjoy trying to understand where you're coming from

Then the next video nasty, there were in fact six rucks from kick off to the penalty.I'll point out the Pumas infringements, McCaw regathers the kick off and wrestles his way up field eventually tackled, this is the first ruck...Guinazu lies on the wrong side of the ruck. Ruck 4 of this 6 ruck sequence Albacete looses his feet flops on A. Smith, then at the 6th ruck Roncero plays the ball on the ground where he is penalised. At which point Peyper warns Lobbe for previous penalties and infringements of the same variety that have occurred earlier in the game. Peyper is not talking about earlier in the half, he is referring also to the first half. Yes what happens in the first half is still of relevance during the rest of the match.

@Toulousain if you are going to throw accusations of cheating and referee bias then you need to be specific or the Kiwi supporters who are so precious about their All Blacks will gang up on you. Then when you're points are found to be incorrect you appear to be bias, begrudging and plain envious of the opposition.

@ Carpelone...Read knock on? Is that when Read tackles the ball carrier before Savea kicks ahead for his first try? My previous post was wrong about Savea, I meant his second try.

Posted 14:53 01st October 2012

Euskadi says...

OK so I thought i'd try to give Toulousain a fair go and I went back and rewatched the match and paid particularly close attention to the two series of plays that she believes (yes I think she does believe herself) ZN are deliberately cheating.

Dagg probably knocked on but irrelevant as from the next ruck the pumas turnover the ball anyway so the missed knock on resulted in no advantage to the ABs in fact Nonu was penalised at that ruck for which the ref played advantage which they eventually came back too when the pumas knocked the ball on at the other side of the field. If the ref had have called the Dagg knock on that would have been a worse result for the Pumas because they eventually got a penalty.

McCaw did extremely well in the series of movements that you refer to, his first entrance to the driving maul was probably from the side so i'll give you that, but the other two offences? Since they are 'clearly penalisable' i'll need you to clarify. If you are referring to the tackle where McCaw smashes Roncero back into the ruck, McCaw does not interfere in that ruck, in fact he is holding his hands above his head when he cannot get up as he is below a couple of Pumas then he gets back to his feet and joins the tackle creating a maul that eventually collapses result turnover neither of those actions are illegal in fact are seriously good plays.
