Four tries: Dragons

Dragons opened their RaboDirect PRO12 account with a comprehensive 37-6 four-try victory over Zebre at Rodney Parade on Friday.

The Welsh region controlled the majority of the match and the game was effectively won by the break after tries from Andy Tuilagi, Will Harries and Dan Evans (twice) saw them open up a comfortable advantage at the interval.

Luciano Orquera responded with two first half penalties, but the Dragons strolled to victory with a Tom Prydie three-pointer the only score of the second period.

It was Zebre's first ever PRO12 encounter having replaced the defunct Aironi at the end of the previous campaign. Their squad is primarily composed of players from their predecessor, a team that finished bottom of the league in the last two years.

And the Italian side didn't get off to the most auspicious start as they found themselves 20-0 down after 20 minutes. Prydie opened the scoring with a penalty before Tuilagi powered across the whitewash for a converted score.

The Dragons' dominance continued when Steffan Jones added a drop-goal and Harries touched down.

Although Orquera reduced the deficit, it only provided a brief respite as Evans went over for the hosts' third converted try of the half.

The visiting fly-half added his second from the tee, but Evans secured the bonus-point before half-time as the Dragons led 34-6 at the break.

Despite their dominance before the interval, the home side struggled to get into their stride in the second period, although Prydie did add a penalty on 68 minutes.

promising start for the Dragons.....can't read too much into it though as Zebre can only get better surely. Bigger test (Leinster AWAY) lies ahead next week, took apart by scarlets though...

Not an auspisous start for the Zebras, hammered by what most posters would say is one of the weaker Pro12 teams.Maybe the occassion overwhelmed them ,simlar to the pumas at Newlands 1st half .So atm im inclined to give them the benifit of the dought. They will however have to improve alot in the comming weeks ,just to prove they are even remotly worthy of their HEC place .Pool 3 of the HEC looks an easy walkthough with both the Zebras and Connacht init atm.
