Chiliboy Ralepelle Bulls v Lions 2012

Into the knockouts: Bulls

The Bulls set up a visit to tackle the seven-time champion Crusaders in next week's knockout stages after defeating the Lions 37-20 at Loftus.

Had they avoided picking up the try bonus-point, the Bulls would have instead gone to Brisbane to face the Reds, who are facing the prospect of not having mercurial pivot Quade Cooper after he was cited for a dangerous tackle earlier in the day.

But they chose to go all-out in their clash with their South African neighbours and ultimately set up what is a mouth-watering clash in Christchurch.

In next week's other game, the Reds host the Sharks. The Stormers and Chiefs have a bye.

The visitors played with heart in their last game of the season, and were level at half-time, but a strong second-half secured victory for the hosts.

Elton Jantjies drew first blood with a penalty but the Bulls replied afterwards with one of their own from Mornè Steyn, who is top of the points table.

The tide turned in the Bulls' favour when winger Akona Ndungane intercepted a floating pass from Jantjies to score the first try of the game after sixteen minutes of play, with Steyn converting.

Jantjies shortened the deficit eight minutes later with a penalty conversion, but Bulls winger Bjorn Basson extended the lead after half an hour, scoring his tenth try of the season.

Francois Hougaard made a run from a scrum in the Lions' 22, pulled in two defenders and offloaded to a speeding Basson, who scored under the posts, with Steyn converting.

Lions scrum-half Michael Bondesio hit back five minutes later though when he also picked the ball up from the back of a scrum to break to his right, dummy and score under the posts.

Jantjies converted to bring his side within four points of the Bulls, while Steyn succeeded with a penalty conversion with only two minutes left in the second half to make it 20-13.

The visitors' dogged determination saw them cross the whitewash on the half-time whistle, with a beardless Joshua Strauss scoring from a driving maul after a successful line-out five metres from the line. Jantjies converted to level the scores at 20-20 going into the break.

The Bulls hit their straps in the second period, adding two more tries to take the match away from the visitors. Hougaard scored the Bulls' third try shortly after the restart with an enterprising run from a ruck on the Lions' 22-metre line, with Steyn converting.

Five minutes later flanker Jacques Potgieter secured the bonus point. Steyn converted and added another three points with a successful penalty with fifteen minutes left in the match.

The Bulls fended off the spirited Lions to keep the scores unchanged in the dying stages.

@Oceansnz - Yeah I hear you, Crusaders & Chiefs will still come up against each other if the Sharks & Crusaders win though.

And even If it does end up being Chiefs vs Reds & Stormers vs Crusaders while there's the potential for an all NZ final it could also turn out to be a nightmare as both the Reds & Stormers are sure to be very tough opponents. Both have good pressurising gameplans that generally suits knockout Rugby.

Bulls have done very well, got written off a bit at the start of the season.

& I'm certainly not going to be writting them off again, they're a very powerful side when playing with confidence.

This final series is going to be full of great match ups, really exciting. The conference system may have flaws but one thing I do like is the extention of the finals from 4 to 6. More knock-out Rugby, not so straight foward, more meaningful games as the regular season gets into the business end, & you still need to have a good strong record to contest them. Bring on next week!

us kiwis won't be writing the Bulls off just yet, NT.

That's what Brumbies players (and maybe fans) thought about the Blues chances yet look at what happened!!

I'm quietly pleased that the Chiefs lost.

If the Crusaders beat the Bulls, then we won't have two NZ teams competing against each other for a finals birth.

Well done the BULLS... it is great to see three RSA teams in the Top Six.... BUT what journey for the next match.... can the BULLS beat the CRUSADERS away from home? This BULLS team is a good team.... but away from home their record is spotty - especially when playing in NEW ZEALAND, in any event good luck.... win this one and the BULLS may well be then be playing the STORMERS....

The Bulls definately did the Sharks a favour by getting the bonus point. The Sharks are a better side than the Reds and most fancy their chances to beat them. Then it would be back to South Africa for the Stormers unless the Bulls pulled off an upset against a full-strength Crusaders side.

The Crusaders are not on there best form while the reds only start getting on their best. The Sharks are also at their peak at the moment. So the best game for me will be the Reds and Sharks...

Think the bulls have done exceptionally well this season with that young squad.

I beg to differ noord_transvaal. The Bulls set pieces look good, which the Crusaders dominated in their past few games but were not convincing.

M not totally counting the Bulls out. With M. Steyn, they can punish Crusaders with penalties if T.Blackadder''s men are not careful. Should be a good game.

why oh why did they go for the bonus point ?! Now for a big hiding in Christchurch. Truth be told they never should have gotten this far. Better luck next year Bulls
