Hurricanes: Mission accomplished

The Hurricanes bagged maximum points in Sydney after beating the Waratahs 33-12 to keep their Super Rugby play-off hopes alive.

It was a case of mission accomplished for the men from Wellington, who managed to cross the whitewash four times for the all-important bonus point that takes them into seventh on the overall standings.

On the other end of the scale, the Waratahs woes continued after slipping to a record sixth defeat on the trot thanks to the Hurricanes' first win over their trans-Tasman rivals since 2006.

It was also the Waratahs' 10th loss in total for the season, but looked capable of ending their losing drought after holding their visitors to a four-point (9-13) lead at half-time only to fall away in the second half.

The Hurricanes scored the first try of the match through future All Blacks winger Julian Savea eight minutes before half-time, and never looked back as they ended up beating the 'Tahs 20-3 in the second half.

The hosts at one stage came within one point (12-13) of the Kiwis, but unlike the Hurricanes they simply didn't capitalise on their opportunities.

Replacement hooker Motu Matu'u got the ball rolling for the 'Canes in the second half to score in the 63rd minute, before skipper Conrad Smith crossed six minutes later when Berrick Barnes rushed out of the line for an intercept.

The Hurricanes claimed their crucial bonus point when replacement halfback Chris Eaton crossed as the full-time siren.

The scorers:

For Waratahs:
Pens: Barnes 4

For Hurricanes:

Is this cooperation or capitulation? The NSW Waratahs marketing people tried to attract more fans with a two-ticket deal, watch the Waratahs v Hurricanes and get free tickets to a rugby league match next weekend involving the Roosters and the Broncos. At least an Australian team will win that one, draw excepted.

With the Blues starting to look a lot better, tthe Lions having a win, the Tahs have the potential to slide to the bottom.

I didn't know this, tv commentators Phil Kearns and Rod Kafer are on the Waratahs Rugby Advisory Committee, part of the Waratahs franchise.

Nothing like having an unbiased commentary team.

I do enjoy their efforts, comedy gold as they make excuses. Just wish they had a 'facts person' to help them, often the 'facts' they present are incorrect, but could be quickly checked by a person with a laptop; maybe too many bangs on the head and hazy memories.

Ref was awful, knock on for a Caines try missed, no pen for final try, and shocking game management Tahs are awful however

I love Trinats. Hes classic. Listen mate, half the bottom of the table are from Australia. 'Nuff said. And as for the top Larry team.. Brumbies and Reds are lucky they get to play the bottom half of the table twice.

Using injuries as an excuse? Ben Afeaki, Toby Smith, Leonard, Alex Bradley, Masaga, Elliot, Kane Thomson, Liam Messam, Nainai Williams, Kahui, Craig Clarke, Latimer, Toby Smith. This is the Chiefs injury list from the start of the season til now. They still managed to make it to the top, like any champion side should :)

I admit they were outplayed by the Reds on that day (notice how i didnt use injuries and the ref as an excuse? you should try it, less people will hate you)

on a side note: before you call anyone dumb make sure you double check your post, it's "affected".

Tweedledumb:

Saders had bryce playing for them against the Reds. Force beat Reds week after bulls game (goes to show how all the injuries and Ioane suspension effected them), but a Reds team getting back to full strenght bet the conf leaders Chiefs.

@Ramage, mate after all it's just sport. I love it and yeah do enjoy seeing the Tahs win but will not let it rule my life, that place is reserved for the Trinity.

@Trinats I agree that the penalty was incorrect, unfortunately by that time we were well and truly out of contention. I personally don't respect Bryce, but have to say that on this occasion he could be excused, the Tahs were so dismal it would be very easy to believe that it was their error. Anyway mate all is good in my sporting world, went and watched the Swans beat the Bulldogs by 92 points today - so my sporting world is A okay.

@trinats, nothing good from the aussie conference so you bring up the crusaders loss to the rebels to try and make you feel better? ...yea the rebels beat the saders...but....the saders beat the reds right?

"Even the depleted Reds would pick up bonus points against Blues and Highlanders (if only they could play them 4 times a year !!!)"

I doubt that mate, these two teams beat the Bulls who put on how many points against the Reds again?

Trinats2: Who's holding up bottom of the ladder ???

well, the bottom eight teams who are supporting the top seven, comprise four from Australia, 2 from South Africa and 2 from New Zealand.

The bottom six, who have no hope of qualifying and may as well just stay home, half of them Australian. Great show, chaps!

So in answer to your question, clearly Australia is holding up the bottom half, and doing a great job too. Suppose we should be thanking them for their support this season.

I didn't blame the ref for the Tahs loss. I said he gifted the Hurricanes a bonus point by yet another dodgy call. Clearly the Tahs player had the rights to contest the ball, he was the tackler and on his feet, the Bryce is right !

Ramage:

Just trying to get some balance on here. If I was honest it would be as much fun !

isthatrightref:

Reds are in with a huge chance, all above them still have to play each other (more or less) Reds in the finals back to full strenght !!!! despite all their injuries and some dodgy ref in CHC.

bk47 you have summed up the real reason for the Flower Girls loss which was their own poor play and not the imagined failings of the referee. Seems you and I watched the same game.

@Wallaroo as a true supporter of the Waratahs I really admire the way you come on here and don't get involved in cheap shots over the losses. It must really annoy you to see the way your team is playing but you still write a level post on here and show all the traits of a good sport.Keep it up and one day maybe one day the flower girls may get to be a bride.

Now that the Rids have next to no show of qualifying I suppose it's inevitable that the master baiter would try to ingratiate himself with the Bok-something/something-Bok ref bashers - clearly Bryce's 2011 S15 Final-winning performance has been forgotten.

Easy points ? That's the Blues and Highlanders............had 50+ points put on the by a team that lost to the Rebels !!! although they did lose to a near fit Rebels outfit (Rebels were without O'Conor !)

Even the depleted Reds would pick up bonus points against Blues and Highlanders (if only they could play them 4 times a year !!!)

Who's holding up bottom of the ladder ???

Not the prettiest of wins but a win none the less. Canes got in grab the 5 points they needed and got out. Good job boys.

While I see the sharks lost to lions and highlanders aren't at their best, something tells me the Canes still probably wont quite make the playoffs. Yes they do get the bye points (btw I think i the most stupid thing in rugby atm) but they still have to beat the Crusaders and the chiefs which I honestly don't think they can do. I would love for my team to prove me wrong however :)

@Trinats2

The reason the tahs lost was because of their terrible handling and overall bad play. Even if as you say Lawrence had a bad game the tahs were just horrible. I must have counted around 5-6 times where the tahs were hot on attack and lost the ball cold. Not to mention having 2 attacking scrums 5m from the canes line and stuffing them up. Canes were given 4 chance to score, they took it.

So don't blame the ref for the crappiness of the tahs, blame the tahs.

It is so hard for Trinuts to say anything good about any team or referee from NZ. He must lead a very sick and spiteful life as the poison he spreads on here week after week is so boring and predictable. He is the biggest whinger and poor sport on here week in and week out. Of course his spiteful post is all a load of rubbish as usual. It is more aimed at the fact that after the Brumbies and Hurricanes win he sees the Reds chance of being in the finals disappearing down the gurglar. Never mind there is possibly one last chance as the Hurricanes and Highlanders have some very hard games so probably wont make it but then who knows. Now that the Sharks have lost it is them whom he must hope fall over.

You have to ask .just what has happened to the Tahs .a star studded team .who are just terriable this season .They along with the Rebels. and Force are just nowhere near good teams imo this season .Just whipping boys and despite the table i think on present form even the Blues and Lions would beat them hamsomely .No wonder the Reds are still in with a chance of a playoff place playing these weak teams 4 times a season is just easy points even with all their injuries
