Tikoirotuma sinks brave Blues

Four tries: Asaeli Tikoirotuma

Four tries from wing Asaeli Tikoirotuma helped the Chiefs to a thrilling 41-34 Super Rugby win over a determined Blues outfit on Saturday.

In arguably the game of the season thus far, the Chiefs outscored their hosts five tries to four that keeps them top of the tournament standings as we head into the June break.

But it so nearly ended with a draw as the never-say-die Blues managed to level the scores 34-34 with ten minutes left to play in North Harbour, until Tikoirotuma restored the Chiefs' seven-point buffer with his fourth touchdown of the match.

The win lifts the Chiefs to 58 points, keeping them seven points clear of the in-form Crusaders on the New Zealand conference standings, while the Blues suffered their 12th defeat from 14 matches.

Unfortunately, the match was punctuated by three yellow cards - two in quick succession in the first half to Blues flanker Steven Luatua and Chiefs winger Maritino Nemani for tip tackles, while Chiefs lock Michael Fitzgerald was binned in the second spell for punching.

For most of the game, the Chiefs led and the Blues responded.

The Blues led for only a short period between the 12th and 15th minutes of the first half when a try to center Francis Saili gave his side a 7-3 lead.

Tikoirotuma's first try in the 15th minute gave the Chiefs a 10-7 advantage and they held that lead to the end, though it was constantly under siege from the determined Blues who were galvanized by the return of Rene Ranger and Rudi Wulf.

The Chiefs opened a 20-10 lead after 31 minutes when Williams crashed through tight defence to score his third try of the season.

But the Blues showed the spirit that prevailed throughout the match when they struck back with a try, conversion and penalty to winger Lachie Munro to level the scores 20-20 by half-time.

The Chiefs drew away again with Tikoirorutam's second try and led 34-20 - their widest margin - when Fijian-born Tikoirotuma completed his hat-trick in the 55th minute.

But again the visitors rallied and refused to accept another loss in what has been a dismal season.

When Fitzgerald was sin-binned after a fracas with an opponent, the Blues took advantage of their numerical advantage and scored tries through Wulf and Ranger to tie the scores at 34-34.

Ranger's try was one for the highlights reel - an outstanding feat of pace and athleticism which left in his wake a long string of attempted tacklers.

But the Chiefs also showed spirit and they refused to give up hope of the victory that cemented their top placing in the tournament.

Robbie Robinson put in a perfectly weighted kick for Tikoirotuma in the 70th minute and the winger won the race to the ball to seal the match.

The scorers:

Quote from the Herald today - re the Chiefs

"Their defensive line, a source of pride during the first eight rounds, was horribly disfigured and the Blues seemed to find it all too easy to find where Aaron Cruden was standing and run at and around him."

Its not just a couple of tackles - its each week now and its not just the Herald and rugby forums noticing - other teams will too.

That's why NZ were lucky to have the much maligned Donald Duck there in the final when the French came hunting in the second half and not Aaron Cruden whose his defense has improved since then. 4 more years and no Sir Ted without him. But old biases are hard to change.

So Cruden missed a couple of tackles, it happens now and then, he'd be first to admit it wasn't his best game of the season but he ran play well and kicked his goals which ultimately won the game.

NHsaints, not sure if you've tuned in much this year but Ranger sux. Hard luck for Messam but he'd be next guy on the list.

Isnt it amazing the turn around of the Chiefs since Foster relinquished the reins as coach. We now have a team full of pride and ability and playing for one another. No more of this win one lose two. No more do we have to hide the fact we support the Chiefs. Oh hang on, where has Foster gone? Geez up the ladder to the All Blacks. Well lets hope he doesn't have too much of a say because if he does I for one am very worried.

Poor blues. They probably had their best game of rugby this year, score some great tries, push the leaders of the comp to the finally minutes......and the lions win pushing the blues to last hahaha. I must suck being a blues supporter this year.

Wow, that really is going beyond the call of duty to prove a point. I don't. Know if you're a kiwi, but was the WC as nerve racking a second time ? :)

Crudeness is growing into a great 10, learning to control the pace of a game, when to inject himself or bring others in - he looks a smart footballer, defence can be taught (if it is indeed a weakness).

My favorite tackle in the match today was when Cruden realizes the Blues will go wide and rushes 30m across field to get to the wing position and prevent a certain try by smashing Ranger of all people and lifting him off his feet and shoving him out.

passtheball ... I accept I could have been wrong & you right so I just had a look at the RWC final from the start until the 34th minute & not once did the French run directly at the channel Cruden was defending .... I suggest you too have a quick look.

In the first half Donald made 2 tackles: in 1 he needed McCaw to complete it & in the other Reid is the main tackler.

In the 2nd half I count Donald being involved in 10 tackles: 2 are individual tackles (1 of which is a head high tackle); in 5 of the other 8 McCaw, Nonu, Kaino, Smith are the main tacklers & in 2 Donald shares honours with another AB (Nonu twice & Kahui once).

Don't get me wrong Donald played well and only totally missed a tackle once on Medard but 4 tackles of the 12 would have been missed tackles without cover from other ABs.

TotalRugbyRules - I suggest you view the W / C final again. This time notice how French forwards and their big centres had started to pour into the 10 channel with increasing success before Aaron Cruden went off. The stats say that Donald made the most tackles of any AB in the second half. He's over 100 kg and an excellent defender and Cruden is about ...? The French were forced to change tactics and regardless of what you think of him as a player the comment I made remains valid for the W / C final regarding Donald's defensive effort.

In the last few games Aaron Cruden has fallen off tackles often costing tries and if this continues he will become, like Merts, a target.

passtheball ...Ha ha - "Stephen Donald won the world cup with his tackling". I'd feel a lot happier with Cruden in the 10 channel than Duck. Cruden missed a couple of tackles today but the two he had players slip through were big units (like Ranger) he was trying to catch from behind because Robbie R is a defensive liability at times at fullback. Donald with his lack of speed off the mark wouldn't have got a hand on either probably. Plus you obviously missed all the tackles Cruden made on the big Blues forwards today. In the RWC Donald had one good run and squeaked in a regulation penalty - albeit a very high pressure kick. That was it. Donald's short kicking game is terrible compared to Cruden who also has a better running game and better place-kicking percentages for the last two seasons ... better than Carter too. Cruden can still improve a lot but he has consistently played well this season and has greatly reduced his error rate. Donald can't even make an impact in the A.P. with Bath unlike the great 10s like Nick Evans.

passtheball: agree about Cruden, who played a crucial role in at least two of the Blues' tries.

great for Tikoirotuma - a start towards his stated goal of playing for Fiji - they play England and Ireland A in November (update your fixtures PR!) maybe if he gets more game time in the last Super matches he'll be up for selection.

He first came to NZ on a Fijian Marist brothers school scholarship, and has gone on to play for 2nd div Manawatu in the Heartland competition. Maybe a star for the future.

Well done Chiefs, what a game. Is this the sames Blues side we have been watch for 14 weeks prior to this? Focused, determined, deliberate and relentless - wow what a turnaround.

what a game! Blues really made the Chiefs work hard for the win...really really hard. Now this aint gonna get any easier for the Chiefs who have the Highlanders, Crusaders and Hurricanes left....

Surely Messam and Ranger can't be held out of the All Blacks for long when they're putting out performances like this??

Watching the Australian derbies & then the NZ derbies is basically like watching two different sports.

Great advertisement for Super Rugby. So happy that the Chiefs held on because that Blues side was relentless.

Entertaining game. As predicted the inexperienced back 4 for the Chiefs were put under pressure from Ranger and co and the green horns lost 20 minutes for the Chiefs. Those two will be watching from the stands from here on while the new Sivivatu bagged four. SBW got the better of Nonu. Cruden's tacking still suspect. Stephen Donald won the world cup with his tackling, not the goal - the French were pouring through 10 until he replaced the injured Cruden. And Liam Messam still not AB standard according to Hansen??
