Tight clash in Christchurch

The Crusaders exacted revenge over the Super Rugby champion Reds on Sunday via a hard-fought 15-11 victory.
Just a solitary try was scored in the action from Christchurch Stadium and that arrived in the second minute when Reds hooker James Hanson burrowed across wide on the left.
But that acted as false hope of a high-scoring game as penalties and errors marred matters.
Tom Taylor kicked five penalties while Mike Harris struck two as the lead changed hands five times.
Taylor reclaimed the lead for the last time with his fourth penalty in the 72nd minute, putting his side ahead 12-11, then sealed the points late on.
The only area in which the Crusaders were wholly superior was at scrums where they dominated the Reds for all but a ten-minute spell in the second half when replacement Wyatt Crockett was binned for a shoulder charge on Will Genia.
The Reds gained the upper hand in most other areas, notably at breakdowns where they forced turnovers and gained early penalties from New Zealand official Bryce Lawrence.
New Zealand-born centre Mike Harris missed his only two kicks at goal in the first half as the Crusaders took a 6-5 lead to half-time. But he landed two from two in the second half to give the Reds an 11-9 lead with the three points that stemmed from Crockett's yellow card.
Penalties began to flow the Crusaders' way in the last ten minutes of the match and Taylor took full advantage, improving his tally for the 2012 season to 38 goals from 45 attempts.
Hanson handled twice in the movement that led to the only try of the match when the Reds charged down a clearing kick immediately after the kick-off. The visitors promptly drove toward the line, patiently recycled possession then helped Hanson over on the blindside.
Taylor kicked a penalty in the seventh minute and another in the 20th to force the first lead change of the match. Harris, who had missed the conversion of Hanson's try, then skewed a 33rd-minute penalty which cost the Reds any chance of taking a lead into the break.
He landed his first goal of the match three minutes into the second spell but Taylor replied only three minutes later. Harris goaled in the 61st minute to make it 11-9 before Taylor decided the match in a result that moves the Crusaders up to second in New Zealand.

Good game to watch. Pity about Lawrence though. How long do the spectators have to wait before someone tells him he isn't good enough. Surely NZ has some refs of a better standard.

happy with the win. Dan better step up his game because Cruden has one hand on the All Black 10 jersey at the moment.

I wasn't convinced before, but here come the Reds!!
If they can keep the saders try-less, that tells me they are making their tackles. The teams that master their defense make the playoffs, and the reversal of fortunes at #10 between Reds/Brumbies will be key in the Oz conference.

What? All the points from penalties? It looks like the Saders playing like the Poms.

Well done Crusaders.
Wasn't quite the one sided match most were expecting, Reds played well. Both sides had some fortune go their way.

Was quietly (very quitetly) cheering on the Red's in the hope that the result would assist the Highlanders in the NZ conference but it was not to be. Not sure what to make of this match I thought the Red's played really well, right in the Crusaders faces, great at the breakdown, obviously taking a leaf out of the Highlanders book in how to unsettle the Crusaders. In the end though they just did not create enough chances despite a pretty bumbling performance by the Crusaders, haven't seen that many errors from them in 2 or 3 seasons. However have to give credit to the Red's and if ever an Aussie side actually learn how to scrummage they may come up with half decent side. I was a bit afraid for the Red's packs saftey at one stage, I thought the Ref may have had to go for uncontested scrums there for a minute such was the uneveness of the contest.. Genia and Ioane were all class and that Liam Gill looks a pretty useful No 7, shame for him that Poocock will be around for a while yet.
I am sure Trinats will be a little excited, obviously the Ref, home ground advantage and the sun was shining to brightly all went against him in the end.

Always better to win ugly than lose pretty but holy cr@p that was ugly... on t'other hand tomorrows points table will read 5. Crusaders - 37 points, 11. Reds - 26 & as predicted 9 adrift of the Brumbies.. also Warriors gave Broncos a hiding (that's league btw) so I have double bragging rights at work on Tuesday :-)
Still a bit worried we'll finish 5th & face a qualifier in SA, Semi in Hamilton then back to SA for the Final as I doubt anyone could pull off that particular treble but, hey, you've gotta be in it to win it, eh.
I await @ T2's excuses...

On that performance today the Reds are not out of taking the OZ conference. The injury to Lealiifano may hinder the Brumbies and let the Reds back in. Brumbies have a byr this week and are still to play Hurricanes, Reds Rebels Force Waratahs and Blues. On current form only Hurricanes and Reds could challenge them but without Lealiifano any of the games could turn. Reds have Chiefs Lions Brumbies, a bye Rebels, Highlanders and Waratahs. Chiefs, Highlanders and Waratahs at home so Brumbies game away is important. So its still interesting to see how well the Brumbies cope without their playmaker. Interesting Carter not yet back to full fitness, Cooper still to return, Lealiifano, Goosen, Lane, Slade and Sopoaga all out truly remarkable.
