Sharks: Leave NZ on a high

The Blues slumped to their sixth defeat of the 2012 Super Rugby season after going down 29-23 to the Sharks at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday.

A terrible week for coach Pat Lam and his troops just got worse, while the Sharks leave New Zealand on a high thanks to their four-try bonus point win that puts them back in the play-offs hunt.

It was the eighth consecutive win for the South Africans over their Kiwi counterparts, who will no doubt face another barrage of criticism in the aftermath of another loss.

The Sharks raced out of the starting blocks first with a try to Steven Sykes, after the lock was on hand to take a pass from skipper Keegan Daniel who did all the hard work by intercepting a Blues pass and racing 50m to the tryline.

A try-saving tackle by Gareth Anscombe stopped Daniel just short, but the Blues pivot couldn't prevent the supporting Sykes from powering over.

Patrick Lambie couldn't add the extras, but was on target with a penalty attempt in the 15th minute to take his team into an 8-0 lead.

The Sharks struck again immediately from the restart after the Blues threw yet another intercept pass to hooker Craig Burden who didn't need a second invite to the tryline as the former wing turned on the gas for a converted score under the posts.

Fifteen points down, and the hosts were in trouble. However, after repeated surges on the Sharks line amounted to nothing, Anscombe took the three points on offer by referee Steve Walsh - who had another shocker with the whistle - to put the Blues on the board.

With half-time approaching, the Blues managed to win an illegal scrum against the feed and Tony Woodcock finished what he started with a try as the prop burrowed over for a crucial score converted by Anscombe.

The Blues pivot then made it a two-point ball game after calmly slotting over a drop-goal from bang in front to take the scores to 15-13 at the break.

The home side made the perfect start to the second half when centre Benson Stanley pounced on a sloppy pass from Sharks scrum-half Charl McLeod for his team's second try. Anscombe dually converted and the Blues were in front for the first time in the match (20-15).

Celebrations in the Eden Park stands didn't last long though as the Sharks hit back straight away with two quickfire tries through Daniel and centre Tim Whitehead - both converted by Lambie.

The first from Daniel saw the number eight dart past two defenders before crossing the line, and the second came after Lambie made a superb line break before linking with that man Daniel who offloaded to Whitehead.

Running at full tilt, the Sharks midfielder knocked the ball on to a Blues defender but managed to snatch back possession and cruise in for the bonus point try that the visitors were lucky to get away with.

With the Blues forced to play catch-up yet again, Anscombe sent over a 67th minute penalty to close the gap to six points which meant the hosts needed a converted try to win the game.

But the Sharks were up to the task, with some exceptional defence keeping the Blues at bay as the visitors hung on for victory.

Firstly an apology to the Sharks players and their fans for the actions of the mindless idiot who threw an object onto the field in disgust at the play of the Bloos which almost hit A sharks player according to reports.

I have been very outspoken about the incident in Pretoria when Meleamu had a bottle thrown at him by an enraged fan. There is no place for this kind of behaviour from any spectator no matter what nationality. Our players and in our I include the Sharks need to be protected. Each week they put their bodies on the line to give us the entertainment we love and idiots like these have no place in the ground.

I see a report has been asked for by Sanza and the Bloos have been given until today (Mon) to reply. I agree with the spokesperson who said that they need to identiy the person and ban that person from the ground. I would add for life I for one certainly hope they can identify the said person and in doing so show there is zero tolerance for this behaviour.

@ Sandle agreed with your comments about Steve Walsh. Good Game.

@ Euskadi the Sharks had the same trouble last week not getting over the try line after doing all the hard work to get there. Couple of dubious decitions IMO but thats anouther story.

Plumtree needs to be a bit more creative as i still feel there game is a little, one dimentional. Whitehead impresses more and more.

Go Sharks!

Not a bad game, the Blues just cant catch a trick...I thought they were unlucky in the first half as they made most of the play only to give up two tries through intercepts...not much you can do about those. The Blues also didnt seem to be able to convert their pressure into tries, at least three times they were right on the Sharks try line then their handling let them down. But credit to the Sharks they took their chances and got the bonus point win although Whiteheads try should not have been, bad mistake by Walsh. Apart from that I also thought Walsh had a good game, I dont quite get what the fuss was over Stanleys try? Can someone explain please?

@ sandal - wrt to Steve Walsh: Spot on mate! He made some mistakes (as all referees do), such as one try to each side that actually weren't legal but he did manage to get a lot of other things right. I actually also noticed that he managed the scrums in a responsible and considerate manner.

@ Planet Rugby

If you are going to make statements such as ""referee Steve Walsh - who had another shocker with the whistle"" I feel it is incumbent on you to put a byline on your report. Your opinion, offered with precious little evidence, passes judgment not only on Walsh's performance in this game, but in previous games. Such opinion from a news organisation should not be wrapped in anonymity.

Walsh did make mistakes, but he also made excellent decisions which many referees would be incapable of. For instance, I can think of many referees from Britain or Ireland who would have carded one player for what appeared to be an accidental foot-trip. Indeed, some of them would probably also have awarded a penalty try.

When successive scrums collapsed or failed, Walsh did not award a penalty simply because he felt it was incumbent on him to do so; he acknowledged that he couldn't find a cause, or perhaps found too many.

This game was contested extremely hard. A lot of mistakes were made by both teams. One team made a number of tackles that appeared high but that went unpunished (but Walsh was on the spot). Under all these circumstances, the frustration and ferocity could easily have degenerated into ill feeling. But Walsh almost always referees a good game and that ill feeling did not arise.

@strooge23

You say: ""Great result for the Sharks. Every time I start to loose faith in these guys they pull one out the fire.""

Yes, a great result for the Sharks. But I find your second observation curious, not least because, short of getting Mark Lawrence to ref them at Eden Park again, I doubt they'll ever get more luck than they had here tonight.

They scored two tries from intercepts, and a third from a patent knock-on. The Blues created far more chances and either blew them (own fault), or had plain bad luck. Hell, on one occasion they were denied a seemingly certain try when the ball carrier was accidentally foot-tripped by a prone Shark defender (I repeat: accidentally).

Far from pulling anything out of the fire, the Sharks offered precious little themselves on attack and were simply handed this one.

This really is unacceptable for the blues...it's like watching Scotland in the 6 nations, always close but always with the poor mistakes letting them down.

Not sure what concerns me most 1) Blues handling 2) Sharks turn-over count 3) number of players with shocking hairstyles. Ranager, Moli, Lambie and Bresler . . . take a bow!
