Cheetahs win cat fight

Two tries: Robert Ebersohn

The Cheetahs made light work of the Lions in their Super Rugby derby clash, winning 26-5 in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The victory was sweet revenge for the Cheetahs who lost this season's opening match to the Lions by one point, and after six matches played it's still John Mitchell's troops only win so far.

A first-half blitz paved the way for a Cheetahs win, who scored all but three of their points before the break with centre Robert Ebersohn bagging two tries.

Ebersohn grabbed a brace as the home side capitalised on the Lions' defensive lapse and errors in their own territory.

Ebersohn's first came after a poor clearance from wing Deon van Rensburg, and from the resulting breakdown, the ball was spread wide and the former beat four defenders to dive over.

The Cheetahs centre completed his double after being put through by speedster Willie le Roux that took the hosts into a handy 23-0 lead at half-time, with victory all but wapped up.

However the had to defend for the majority of the second half, but still managed to keep the Lions scoreless for 65 minutes, until Cobus Grobbelaar crossed for a try which turned out to be the only points scored by the visitors in the match.

The result means that the Lions drop down to last place in the standing below the Blues due to points differential and the Cheetahs move up to 11th.

I think because of the different stage of the season. The CC is usually much more contested than SA SR Conference, as it is played later, when most of the Boks are on national duty..

Cheetahs rested in the 2nd half and allowed the Lions to play some. good to see that their defensive patterns are coming together now. Coosen continues to impress and Andries Strauss must be getting Heineke Meyer to pay attention, Willie Le Roux as well.

If the Cheetahs can defend this way in future, it looks promising...
