Hot: Edinburgh....Round: Piri Weepu
It's time for our weekly wrap of who has their name in lights at the moment... and who is making the headlines for the wrong reasons.
They're on fire!
Mark Hammett's Hurricanes: Not many bookies, fans or pundits - ourselves included - were backing the new-look Hurricanes to do much this year but four victories later the 'Canes coach must be thinking of opening a humble pie factory behind Westpac Stadium. As a group of big-name former Hurricanes on the other end of New Zealand's North Island have realised, there are no guarantees in Super Rugby. Success starts with self belief and Hammett clearly has his troops singing positive notes from the same hymn sheet.
Edinburgh: A stunning performance for a deserved win in front of a record crowd. History was made at Murrayfield on Saturday as a Scottish team made the Heineken Cup semi-finals for the first time. Can Edinburgh now go to the Irish capital and cause another upset?
Leinster: After smashing Cardiff by over 30 points, the defending champions are the bookies' favourites to lift the trophy in 2012. HOT!
Ulster and Clermont: Winning a European knock-out game is always worthy of praise, but all the more so when it's done away from home. The reward? Semi-finals at venues as close to home as one could ask for. A Pool Four reunion in the final at Twickenham next month is on the cards.
Stormers: Still unbeaten, the Super Rugby table-toppers seem to be getting stronger by the week after putting on their best performance yet, dominating the Highlanders with the kind of physicality that will scare even the strongest of packs. Next stop, Christchurch.
French Amlin Challenge Cup teams: Stade Français, Toulon, Biarritz and Brive ensured the Amlin Challenge Cup semi-finals will be an all-French affair. With a place in the Heineken Cup up for grabs for the title winners, Biarritz will be especially motived to sneak into Europe's top competition through the backdoor since qualification via the Top 14 is impossible after their dismal domestic season. The Basques seem like a decent bet having now put together a five-game winning streak.
Get these guys a blanket!
The Bulls-Crusaders eye-gouge allegation incident: Todd Blackadder insists his guys have done nothing wrong and is demanding an apology from the South Africans. The Bulls insist their guys didn't make the accusations up, saying no video evidence doesn't necessarily mean nothing happened. We're not sure which is worse, gouging or pointing the...er...finger at an innocent player. There's a stink here, but who's to blame?
Toulouse: The four-time champs were the one team expected to win on the road last weekend and got it horribly wrong. Timoci Matanavou was the embodiment of their Jekyll-and-Hyde performance as the Red and Black Machine stuttered and choked: The Fijian wing scored a wonderful individual try, but was a liability as soon the ball went into the air. He didn't get much help from veteran centre Yannick Jauzion, who looked like a fish out of water at full-back.
Cardiff Blues: The visitors were played off the park in Dublin as the Blues' recent slump reached new depths. "Unfortunately there have been a few things on and off the playing field that have clouded things a little bit," coach Gareth Baber told Wales online, admitting the exodus of as many as 12 players at the end of the season is already taking it's toll. "A lot of people go on gardening leave if they are realising they are leaving a job in a short period of time but rugby players are expected to honour their contracts."
Munster and Saracens: Munster are not supposed to lose at Thomond Park. Ever. Two defeats in as many outings has left a serious dent in morale in the Red Army's grandstands. But at least those grandstands were full, unlike at Vicarage Road where the locals were drowned out by the noise coming from the visiting Ultras Vulcans. That said, the pedestrian pace of the Sarries attack wasn't worth singing about.
The mess in Auckland: Where do we start? Pat Lam has come in for some harsh treatment and those so-called 'fans' who were throwing racial mud on Twitter deserve to be thrown off the edge at the Downtown Ferry Terminal. But the Blues boss does have a lot to answer for since the pre-tournament favourites look unlikely to make the play-offs. Round-bellied Piri Weepu hasn't covered himself in glory either. Good on Kev Mealamu for reminding his All Black team-mate that he is a "professional."
The ERC sem-final draw system: Leinster and Edinburgh finished the Heineken Cup pool stages ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively. Clermont and Ulster finished ranked 5th and 8th. Yet Leinster must travel to Bordeaux and Edinburgh must go to Dublin for the semi-finals. Eh?
Aironi: It's sad news that financial constraints will see Aironi exit the Pro12 at the end of the season. Forming a franchise from a group of clubs in Italian rugby's traditional heartland in the northeast seemed like a good idea but it has turned out to be a huge flop. The root of the problem is, and has always been, results. Losing teams don't attract fans. No spectators = no funds from ticket sales. The Italian Federation are planning to nominate another team for the Pro12 next season, and must now decide whether to go for a different team from the north or re-examine their original plans to have a side based in Rome.

@BokAvenger: glad you see the funny side. I agree with you, he should come out. Then all us bigots can laugh at him together eh?

@Bones7
Know what gives me the biggest laugh here? That guy who every few months rails against the IRB and their dalliances with "their ladyboys". You cannot argue against it, and it always cracks me up.
Sorry I can't remember who it is.

@philipjfry- no mate, I have absolutely no trouble with gay chaps. That's why I think Gaystar must come out of the closet now and be proud of who he is

Curates_egg is not wrong in all what he said. However, the potential of Viadana is not significant even in the Italian landscape, not to mention in Europe.
I would support a central Italy based franchise, which can in turn play in Roma, in L'Aquila and Prato. That would be ideal. Not many years age, the final of the Italian Championship was Roma vs L'Aquila. The problem of rugby in Roma is that it is too fragmented and that no effort was done for unifying it.
Back to the Celtic League embarassment, we need to mention also the selfish and uncompromising attitude of Treviso (a club and not a franchise) which told FIR they would not care less to be part of a franchise. Dondi should have had the b@&£ls to kick them out of the Celtic League and promote a franchise with Rovigo, Padova etc. instead

@ Ed - I'm as puzzled as you are about the anti-Bulls slant you are supposedly running, keep up the good work!
It's definitely a bad sign that I laughed out loud at work when I saw the 'GayStarr' comment. As witty comebacks go that's up there in the Oscar Wilde drawer.

No anti-gay comments, please. There's nothing "gay" about being gay, ok?
The editor says.... @EVERYONE: Now that we've sorted that out, can we get back to rugby please?

@ Sandal...
To be honest with you, I did'nt realise that the players you mentioned who left were locals, you make a valid point. I think the resaon rugby has become more popular in Ireland over the years is that the majority of the players are actually from the areas they represent.

This site perpetrates and propagates anti- bull sentiment, it really isn't cool. I'm not a bulls supporter but if it continues then you'll lose a follower. Why is it so difficult to find sites that are able to remain diplomatic and proffessional.

@BokAvenger: You referred to JayStarr as 'GayStarr'. Did you intend for the comment to be offensive? Have you got something against gay people?

"Islander" is a term one rarely hears these days, thank god. If people used it against Lam then the chances are they are elderly reactionaries. It was commonly used by racists in the 70s and 80s, people who would latch on to a court case and demand deportation for the supposed villain. These were very unpleasant types on the right of the political spectrum.
Nowadays hardly anyone would think of Lam as an "Islander". He's a Kiwi.

You say: ""I remember Sandal writing before the season started that it would be a disaster, so i for one am delighted for the Hurricanes Fans.""
Er, did I say before the season started that it would be a disaster? Am I not being slightly misquoted? I certainly said Mark Hammett's influence had been a disaster. And who could deny that last year was disastrous for the Hurricanes. An awful season was followed by the departure of the following All Blacks: Tialata, Hore, Schwalger, Weepu, Cruden, Nonu and Gear. A team with home-based players was dismantled. Numerous players from the Hurricanes catchment area, particularly Hawkes Bay, are playing for other franchises, most notably the Chiefs. Under Hammett, we have seen a quickening of the process towards mercenary (well, perhaps for the moment merely exiled) players touting their skills to clubs with no concept of home -- that is, the model offered by professional soccer.
So the disaster happened before a single game was played this season. And this year's results, however good, cannot alter the damage done.
But yes, the Canes are at times a pleasure to watch (not the front row, mind you, but that's what happens when you lose three All Blacks). I have delighted in their victories this year. How many more they will get, I don't know; but I shall be cheering for them. But think what might have happened if Hammett had built on his team, rather than broken it up.
Anyway, Jones, thank you for your kind wishes.

It's not a big award. Everyone knows Leinster are doing well anyway. Relax...
And I don't know about you, but I don't like the favourite tag or being over praised. They're not necessary. All that matters is who actually wins at the end of the day.

I think that you're wrong about Rome as a non lucrative venue and lack of audience.
In Rome and "surroundings" rugby is played and appreciate it. L'Aquila is not too far, so is Viterbo and many Tuscanian and Napolitan teams. Rome itself have 4 clubs that gathers a lot of young talents that are then sing up in "big" clubs such as Aironi and Treviso. Toniolatti, Venditti, the Pratichetti brothers and others already played for the National team.
The Flaminio is perfect for club teams and it will be better after the ongoing improvements.
Another viable option it would be a Tuscany based franchise. Rugby is growing a lot in the last 10 years in Tuscany. NOt to mention the beauty of it's people, culture, food and turistic appeal.

Great on Hammett and Co. for having the **** to cut ABs from their roster....The Blues must be thinking now, 'oh what a mess'....In the long run the Hurricanes will benefit and it has already started with having players who think collectively as a team compared to some big shots who think only for themselves...
