Rougerie sidelined for six weeks

Aurelien Rougerie C Clermont vs Grenoble

Ankle injury: Aurelien Rougerie

Clermont captain, and favourite amongst those who like to bet on rugby, Aurelien Rougerie will be sidelined for six weeks after sustaining an ankle injury in his side's Top 14 win over Bayonne on Sunday.

Rougerie was injured when Bayonne's Benjamin Boyet slid in, football style, and connected studs full on with the France international's right ankle late in the second half.

The centre, who was cleared of any fracture, will miss two matches of the Heineken Cup Pool stages away to Exeter and Scarlets.

Rougerie will undergo further tests and treatment this week but the injury could also cast doubt on his availability for France in the opening round of next year's Six Nations, something that could see the odds on a French win lengthen with bookmakers like Paddy Power.

I think that it is fair to say that Rougerie is not a widely admired player in the SH....partly the eye gouging, partly (I think) something else--he looks like life was too easy--right schools--choir boy looks--famous parents--silver spoon...unlike Freddie Michalak who looks like he had to get down in the mud to get where he is....a rugby God who has all of the mercurial brilliance of Quade Cooper on attack but also does his own tackling....I'd walk a hundred miles to watch Freddie play.

Anyway, at least Rougerie stayed fit for long enough to shut the unpleasant nine tenths of the Leinster fan base up...misfit, scumcero et al.

he's not my favourite guy (that's me being polite) but the injury was totally freaky. it looked like a serious fracture at the time. thankfully it's just a sprain. as hear-of-oak says there is plenty of back-up for france. most people here think he will never be picked again in any event because of rwc final. asm won't suffer much either with all blacks benson stanley and regan king to slot in, as well as nakaitaci who's having a great season.

so, all in all, no harm done....

....and nice to see a few happy new year wishes from our kiwi friends!!

An English view on this ......

France have other great centres. Rougerie's a great player but they have strength in depth at centre.

So if anyone thinks this makes France weaker for the 6N, it won't.
