Wilkinson to decide in February

Decision date: Jonny Wilkinson

Toulon fly-half Jonny Wilkinson will make a decision in February on whether to retire at the end of the season.

The former England number ten's contract expires in June, with the 33-year old debating whether to hang up his boots at the end of the current campaign or sign a one-year extension.

Wilkinson has also been touted as a possible tourist with the Lions in Australia next June, 12 years on from when he starred on the 2001 tour.

"I'm capable of carrying on, but it's a delicate balance," said Wilkinson to L'Equipe.

"The question isn't what I would like to do, but what is best for my team. After I've asked myself that question, then I'll think about myself."

Toulon are currently flying in the Top 14 and Heineken Cup, with Wilkinson not ruling out the possibility of completing a famous double at the end of the season.

"Can we do the double? I'd say yes," added Wilkinson.

"I'm never satisfied, but I'm happy with how we've played. We're heading in the right direction. The most important thing is the rapport between the players, and that's where we're lucky."

Myself i think he will go for annother season at Toulon, his obvisously enjoying his time there ,and with the support he has now with Gitaue and Michlak ,both able to take the FH load when nessasary, its not all on his shoulders now ,as it usually was. After that perhaps a season in Japan beckons, and a coaching future ..

I'd like to see him shift to 12 and go for two more seasons. If Toulon are too well loaded with talent maybe he can rejoin Newcastle on their return to Aviva. Or one more year with Toulon then Aviva. It's the coaches decision on what's best for the team he's just got to want to continue. Re money; he's going to make what he wants and delaying retirement probably lowers his income.
