Any takers on Clancy with the penalty goal for Wales?

Anyone? Are you surprised?

To Staph. I am not swayed by commentators or the camera lens. It is a fact that the scrum was moving forward and had not stopped when the referee called use it.

This is a clear error. I really dont care about who won the game as I am completely neutral. My concern is inconsistency and referees who will not make the correct call when under pressure. Can we assume that if there is only 2 points in a world cup semi final then no penalties will be awarded in the last few minutes?

I agree with other comments that Cheika should be fined and acted badly as in my previous email.

As i said previously i do not agree with what Cheika did and he should be fined.

My issue is a lack of consistency form referees. I am not speculating when I say that the referee called use it when the scrum was moving forward and the ball had just arrived at the number 8s feet. I do not agree with referee abuse. I am saying that if officials are seen to be dropped for error it will reduce abuse, as supporters will see that performances are being monitored. This happens in the NRL. Would he have made the same call if it was a scrum 5 minutes into the game?

Jonathan1,

You're only speculating. There is no excuse for that abuse.

Referees do suffer the consequences of poor performances and are subject to demotion. It isn't a knee-jerk reaction, as the pool of replacement officials is quite limited. Employ some sense and don't be swayed so easily by the commentators and the camera lens.

Finally, "an arrogant know it all" referee is ideal if you're going to have every other professional on the pitch persuade him otherwise.

The fact of the matter is no referee is perfect - in this game I think we can all agree Clancy made quite a few mistakes. However, that is simply part of the game - playing the referee and living with the decisions he makes.

Yes you can feel sorry for the Stade players but with the amount of possession they had in that game, it should have been dead and buried regardless of the Harlequins score.

Blaming it on the ref only forms part of the excuse - the other side of it for me is that they didn't convert pressure into points.

Cheika deserves the fine for the way he acted, regardless of the decision that Clancy made.

What about the Stade players? There were three scrums at the end of the game. The first two were collapsed by Harlequins. Why no penalty? The referee did not want to give a penalty to decide the game. Hence the abuse which is obviously not a good look. Referees need to be dropped if they do not perform. Clancy is not up to standard and has an arrogant know it all demeanour!

It is a tenet of our faith that the match officials, no matter how incompetent or biased in the eye of the beholder, be treated with respect and deference at all times I spend time every training session with my under 10s instilling this and the Rugby Code. I sadly fear that this may be part of thin end of the wedge and we may end up like certain football codes played with a spherical ball, showing no respect for the match officials, with players whining like 3 year olds and celebrating their successes in an unseemly and disrespectful way. I for one have absolutely no sympathy for Mr Cheika, he needs to grow up.
