Pumas claim historic draw with Boks

Smashed: The Boks got a taste of their own medicine

South Africa needed a charge-down try to snatch a 16-all draw against Argentina at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza on Saturday.

The outcome is the Pumas' best result in 15 Tests with the Springboks, but the hosts will nevertheless be bitterly disappointed after leading the match until the 65th minute.

Argentina held a deserved 13-3 lead at half-time as the limitations of South Africa's predictable game plan were exposed. Unable to dominate their opponents physically or at the set piece, the Boks no had alternative solution to get past the resolute Argentine defence.

Intensity is sometimes an overused word in rugby columns but the Pumas were positively breathing fire! It's a rare sight to witness the Springboks outmuscled at the breakdown area but they were coming off second best as the hosts threw numbers into the contact area, especially in the first hour.

Poor decision making and an inexcusable number of missed tackles left Heyneke Meyer's men staring defeat in the face until Frans Steyn saved their blushes with an opportunistic try.

The verdict from Boks fans will be clear: Simply not good enough.

Argentina were first on the scoreboard when Martín Rodríguez landed a penalty with his second attempt at goal.

The Pumas showed a refreshing commitment to keep the ball alive and were rewarded with a try via Route One at the end of an eight-phase charge. Centre Santiago Fernández collected the ball after a strong run form prop Juan Figallo to ghost into a gap and score under the sticks. Rodríguez added the easy extras.

The full-back missed another opportunity to extend the lead but visiting pivot Morné Steyn was also off target with his first penalty attempt, leaving the scores at 10-0 on the half-hour mark.

South Africa's fly-half landed his next shot though to become the Springboks' highest all-time points scorer, but Rodríguez replied in kind just before the interval to maintain the ten-point gap as the teams swapped ends.

Steyn and Rodríguez traded penalties early in the second period but referee Steve Walsh was starting to tire of Argentina's infringements on the deck and the South African fly-half could reduce the deficit to seven points.

Fernández narrowly missed a drop goal as the hosts tried to run down the clock, but the Pumas were getting ahead of themselves. The game was far from over.

The boisterous crowd was finally subdued when Frans Steyn charged down Marcelo Bosch and jogged in for a match-changing try. His namesake's conversion levelled matters and the scorers were not troubled again.

Man of the match: Veteran prop Rodrigo Roncero had a storming game but we can't look past Pumas skipper Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe who was brilliant at the breakdown, outstanding on defence and made life very difficult for the Boks in the line-outs.

Moment of the match: You've never heard a roar from a rugby crowd like the one after Santiago Fernández's try. It was a great moment for Argentine rugby not only because it put the Pumas ten points ahead but because of the way the hosts threw themselves into contact to set it up. 'Commitment' does not even begin to describe it.

Villain of the match: Heyneke Meyer. Not even the Bulls play old-school Bulls rugby anymore. Something needs to change. Fast.

The question before the tournament was 'how long will it be before the Argies become truly competitive?' Well it looks like the answer is two weeks, not two tournaments or more, lets just hope they can keep it up. If South Africa struggled to weather the storm against the might Argentina pack at times them I can only imagine the carnage they are capable of inflicting upon the Aussies when they play them at home. Some people might complain about forward-oriented sides but the way they are so physical and organised at the breakdown makes them quite entertaining I think. South Africa's style didn't work at all, trying to outmuscle a very passionate, committed and savvy Argentinian side and kicking the ball to a team of brilliant high-ball receivers who take a long time to cough it back up. If they had played the way they started to towards the end of the game earlier, keeping the ball in hand and away from contact they would have come off better I think.

Well done Argentina, sorry you did not get the win your fans and team deserved. Springbok fans will be alarmed. Scotland went to Argentina and won a series 2-0 using a sound gameplan that retained possession and ran their big pack all over the park. If the Boks can't do that then their gameplan is hopelessly flawed. Morne Steyn was not alone in being poor but he's had several chances too many. Yes, lots of key players missing but I fear the Boks are on the wrong road to rebuilding.

When my fellow countrymen expressed concern that HM's coaching would be one dimensional, I disagreed...it seems I might be wrong. The Springboks were shocking, to say the least! This year has been particularly hard as I support the Stormers aswell. The frustration for us SAFFAS is knowing the amount of talent we have but lacking the ability to use it. Lobbe's remark when asked what the key was to their improved performance "giving everything all the time" just about sums it up. Can someone tell me where the real Springboks are??? Anyways, Go Bokke (and by go I mean forward JDV not sideways)

Wow Pumas are a fun team to watch when they play like that.

Shame that they did not win. They are going to be hard to play at home for all the teams.

well, well, well.... If you want to have an arm wrestle with a team that specialises in arm wrestles... then this is what can happen.

I predict the ABs will put 40 points on Argentina in 2 weeks.

Aimless kicks when SA needed to keep the ball and build scoring opportunities. Oh, if they could just stop the aimless kicks. Couldn't believe at 76 minutes when Morne put up yet another bomb. We've given up hoping for invention, but please just hold onto the ball. No lessons learnt or any improvement after 5 tests under Heyneke Meyer. Aimless kicks and poor ball protection at breakdown continue. Well done to Argentina, did all their homework and out-Bokked the Boks (who are quickly losing their right to be called Boks). All of Heyneke's Bulls friends were rubbish. Potgieter was nowhere - he should have gone off, not Coetzee. Particularly disappointing was Bekker, played like he didn't want to be there. Pienaar should start. Whatever - NZ are going to slaugher SA, Australia probably also.

great result for the pumas, they even deserved the win (arguably). That SA try was a bit of a fluke but the Boks could have won it though with that 70+ minute penalty. I liked the determination, good match.

i don`t understand why the bookies set a 41,5 point total for this game. easy money.

nice to see the underdog play above its condition, i hope one day romanian rugby will again be able to compete at this level but the chances are unfortuanetly slim.

SHUTOUT!!!!

But in all honesty, the aussie pack really stepped up in that 1st half and the overall match. Wish they coulda held it up for the full 80. And all the Sitaleki Timani doubters (you know yourselves) shown up. Really had a massive (in more ways than one) 1st half. Have aussie just got their lock enforcer????

I know we havent seen the Abs against the boks but i would highly suggest that we already know the winner of the comp. If aus can play against Sa like they did today then its really a toss up between the two.

Now cmon pumas make me happy, but given that i'll be pretty drunk by that match, i guess i'll be already happy.

On a side note, does anyone else find it difficult to make posts via mobile phone? Planetrugby isnt that mobile friendly or is it that my smart phone isnt really that smart??? Editor?? Anyone??

Very unlucky result, the game plan worked very well for Argentina, but again - unable to transform opportunities into points. In any case : Is good to see them playing at this intensity and showing everyone that they are up for deserved new challenge.

Well just how lucky where SA to get that charge down??Matched all game by the pumas for intensity and physicality, and again outplayed at the breakdown. The pumas defence was dynamic and very effective, and where very unlucky imo to just get a draw instead of a deserved win.The bokke played a get out of jail card today
